Today I found a extra wire not hooked up to anything. It is on the headlight harness about 10-12 inches down from the headlight socket. I know the 2 right by the socket are for foreign bikes but this white wire is further down, with a black plug. Never noted it before. Is this "normal" or is something unplugged ??
On many models the white wire is used for high beam- from the hi/lo switch, white carries power to the high beam filament. it also splits off to the high beam indicator on the dash.
that wire will only have power when the hi beam is selected.
my 2009 wiring diagrams show no capped or unused white wire ( with no other color striped on it).
while it is tempting to add acc to the unused EU spec "city light" or "position light" wiring, overloading this circuit ( shown below) - depending on model/year may leave the rider without lights...or a completely dead ride if the ign. switch contacts burn up.
the owner should look at the gauge of the wiring and the rated fuse of the entire circuit they are tapping into...the position light wiring is designed for a 5 watt light bulb, so the owner takes responsibility if the mod goes wrong.
I work on Harley's and the two wires by the headlight plug are for acc. You can't put any high voltage stuff on those. To hook up a gps, like I did, you have to get a gps hardwire kit. It has a box inline that regulates the power to your gps so you don't blow fuses. If you have an acc switch on the dash, the plug for that is under the seat by the battery.
