IMO you should get rid of the stock head pipe. That will accomplish several things. Reduce Heat/Improve performance/Improve Sound.
I am running the 2/1/2 ceramic header with 4" jackpots and the sound is awesome, runs great and certainly cooler.
I found myself in the same situation as the OP, the stock header with cat really muffles the sound alot and the jackpot muffs with packing, while having a deep bassy note, didn't have enough bark for me when I got on it.
I found choosing my exhaust to be, well, exhausting. It's so difficult to take someone's word on what sounds great, because as it's been said a million times, it's a subjective preference. That's why you see some guys changing exhausts 2 or 3 times to find that perfect sound.
In the meantime, I also removed the packing from the baffles and it helped a decent amount. It does not appear to have affected performance at all, or least not enough to notice.
Removing the packing added some high-frequency "pop" back to the sound of the mufflers and it's not terribly "tinny". I like it much better now; however, it's still not aggressive enough for me so I'll end up going with a true dual or possibly even dragos dragula 2-1 (if I get concerned about performance) in the near future.
Fuel Moto told me the standard 4" Jackpots are 83db at idle and 92db under acceleration. The competion baffles are 89db at idle and 100.3db under acceleration. Doesn't sound like much difference but OSHA frowns on stuff over 90db in the work place.
