Default Visor headlight trim ring suggestions

I've got a 14 FLHXS, and an 11 FLSTN. On the FLSTN, I added the visor trim rings to the signals, passing lamps, and headlight. IMO, it looks great. I went to do the same thing to the new bike, and everything looked great till I did the headlight. The HD headlight visor trim attaches OVER the existing stock ring instead of replacing it. Problem is, the piece is supposed to screw together at the bottom, but doesn't. There's a gap about 1/4' wide. Stupid me, I didn't read the reviews online of the piece or I would have known that.

It looks fine from the side, but from the front it's not acceptable.

Anyone know of an aftermarket piece that fits and doesn't have this problem, or has anyone come up with a way to close up the gap?

You have to loosen up the stock trim ring to let the new one settle down behind it. That should allow you enough room to draw the gap up tight.

How loose? I had it backed off enough to get the lip behind it, but the instructions say that after you get the lip seated you should tighten it back down? Should I leave the stock ring loosened and not worry about it?

You have to make sure its snapped behind the stock ring, leave the stock ring a little loose, then on the new ring, use some needle nose vice grips (wrapped with a rag or something so you don't scratch it) to pinch the bottom together until you can get the little nut and bolt started, that should close the gap on the bottom, it did on mine. Good luck.

Had mine on for many years. A bit of a fiddle, even when refitting it, but persistence pays!

You will find a ton of threads on this. I had a nightmare of a time and after all the research on HD Forums I still couldn't figure out why some bikes have an issue and some don't. I couldn't get it done per instructions alone or with help from some of my more experienced mechanic buddies. I found a thread that worked and I am very happy with the look and fit. Take the old ring off and throw it, smash it or do what every makes you feel good. Then take the bolts out that hold the headlight in and put on 1/4 washers so the ring has something to grab onto. Then take a 1/4 weather stripping with one side adhesive and put the adhesive side around the headlight. Put the ring on and tighten down. It will work just like the two passing lights. No gap and fits like a glove. I still can't tell if there is an inconsistency with the ring or with the original headlight ring on some bikes. Some guys have no issues. Some can get it on with some love and others have to get rid of the old ring altogether.

If you get it on right, there is no gap.

So I farted around with the thing for about half an hour tonight. Finally pulled the stock ring out of frustration. Turns out the gap is there even if it's not mounted on the bike. The circumference of the stock ring is simply too big.

Does anyone make a decent aftermarket part?
