Think I've settled on this unit. Coming from a Nuvi 40 which is pretty basic. Does anyone know if the 2557 GPS has a jack to plug into the radio so I can hear the prompts over the radio? The specs say it has a USB and power cord jacks but I think I need a mini to mini correct?
That looks like a nice unit. I have an aftermarket radio and it has a regular size USB connection. I've never hooked my Garmin up to it, but I would assume that you'd need a mini-to-regular USB cord. Also, the manual doesn't really say if the voice prompts would go through the radio, but as advanced as that unit seems to be, I would be surprised if it didn't. Does yours have Bluetooth capability?
I have the 2597LMT for my car, and sometimes use on my RK. The 2557 and 2597 are the same sans some extra features. It does not have an audio port to connect to an external audio device.
The motorcycle units, like the 590, and some of the handheld Garmin units have the audio connections.
I have a 2557LMT there is no audio output other than a speaker. I used mine going from coast to coast and back... works well. Don't really miss the audio.
Guys, I don't really get it. How do you use your non Garmin GPS w/o audio? I use my cell phone for GPS and I try not to look down at it but try to focus more on the audio.

Easy. I just watch the upper left corner of the screen. It tells me how far to the next turn and what direction. It also has the speed limit and true vehicle speed in the lower right corner. And, occasionally, its good to see the picture of a junction. Never hear mine. I'm using a 1490 Nuvi.

Yup, I never use the sound either. Like harleyjth said, a quick glance gives you all the information you need.

Easy, just a quick glance at it gives all the information I need, and I can't stand to listen to the annoying GPS voice.

X2!!
Not sure how you can look at the GPS and the road in some congested areas. That's why I need audio. Looking at some old Garmin 760 units with the audio out plug.
