Anyone notice how many engineers and product development people are on this board? Turn it off, turn it on, etc.. My thought is HD designed the system to be turned off/on to help reduce the number of complaints and unneeded trips into the dealers. Never had an issue with mine, leave it turned on all the time. In fact it's something that until I read this thread I forgot about the function to be truthful. I think sometimes we over analyze things!
I have never read ANYwhere that claims it is to prevent engine overheating.
If it was truly a tool to save the engine, we would not have the option to shut it off...
It only works at idle, and the engine gets hotter when it is NOT at idle. i.e., low speed under load..
Idle and stopped, however, is when the rider notices the heat, and that is when the EITMS activates.
If I'm wrong, I'm ok with that. Somebody show me where I'm wrong, and I'll buy the first round when we get to share some miles.
+1 everything I have seen says its for rider comfort

Don't believe everything you hear and read, because HD could really give a $hit less about rider comfort.
Achieving emissions compliance has required leaner fuel/air mixtures, which in turn could produce a hotter-running engine during long periods of idle. For those interested, Harley-Davidson made the Engine Idle Temperature Management System (EITMS) available, beginning with certain 2007 models. At idle, when the engine reaches a certain temperature, EITMS shuts off fuel to the rear cylinder, leaving it to idle only on the front cylinder, thus cooling off the rear. To improve heat dissipation, cylinder-cooling fins on the Twin Cam engines are wider than on the Evolution engine.
It's a pain in the A#$! Mine kept coming on at about 95 degrees and then popping when you gave it throttle. My bike does not get very hot at all-I turned mine off for good!
(w/key on hold throttle all the way counter clockwise for 10 seconds=EITMS Disabled)
I have mine set at disabled. Twice when it EITMS turned on when I gave some throttle to start from a light the bike stalled. For those who might suggest, I had not let off the clutch yet, just gave some throttle.
