I have hit a lot of deer over the years, luckily most while in my truck which had deer whistles. Hit one on my bike which did not have whistles.
Deer whistles work in that they make deer run but they don't tell them which way to run. Every deer that I have hit has been running because it was scared. I even had a deer run into my drivers side door because he was scared. I have yet to hit one that was standing beside the road. New bike and new truck don't have, nor will ever have deer whistles as long as I own them.
Oh yeah as to the sunset and sunrise myth about being more dangerous times to ride due to increased deer activity, most of my deer hits have occurred in broad daylight. The deer are always there any time of the day and they run when scared no matter the time of day.
The deer I hit on the bike was at 1:00 in the afternoon and she was laying down beside the road when she got scared and bolted just that quick right in front of me. From "a deer" to "oh ****" in less than a nanosecond.
Glad you are ok. The bike is replaceable. You are not.
I'm a new RGS owner because I hit a deer last June. Totaled the old bike and nearly totaled me. But I'm doing way better than the damn deer.
QUESTION FOR EVERYONE THAT HAS / HAS NOT HIT DEER;
Did you have any 'deer whistles' on your bike? I've noticed that all of the LEOs have them on their bikes. Maybe they work?
BTW; Your helmet is covered under your insurance and will be replaced by them. Now if only they would cover the leathers that the EMTs cut off of me...
My leather would have been covered, but I was at my $3000 accessory coverage. Unfortunately for me....my helmet was hanging in the garage.
Glad you are ok. The bike is replaceable. You are not.

we have a pretty bad deer problem here also, IMHO, loud pipes are the best deer whistles going. have several buddies on quiet bikes that have had deer encounters. closest I have had one get to my bike is @ 30 yds. glad youre ok tho
