Default Drilled exhaust

I finally drill my exhaust on my 2003 V-Rod. I first tapped the start then (as it was suggested) started drilling small holes then larger. I stopped at 1/4 inch. It does sound a lot better, deeper than stock. I drill 8 holes per pipe. I might go larger after a while.

My question, do I have paint the back plate? It does not seem that the area is that large, only the edges that are bare metal.

Thanks for the feedback.

It should get hot enough to not be an issue. The headpipes aren't painted and you don't see them rusting. You are a ways away from the heads so if you do use high-temp paint, otherwise you'll just bake it off.

Thanks for your advise. Since I still have the 1/4 holes. I will ride with what I did and decide if I want to drill larger. So I will forgo the painting part for now.

syata, did you do anything to the intake and/or computer or did you just drill these holes?? I got a friend who's wanting a little more sound out of his Vrod but don't want to go thru the intake and remapping just to get it.......

Thanks,
Ken

I just did the drilling. You can hear a difference with 1/3 and 1/4 holes adn did not cost me any money.

One advise, tap out the holes first, you can use a tap or even a screw, that way you can start the 'hole' and the drill will not slide across when you try and drill the actual hole.

To get more volume out of your stock pipes you can drill holes into the back plate of your mufflers. People did experiments on the V-Rod in which you don't have the engine remapped if you stay below 1/2 inch with 8 holes per pipe.

I drilled my stock pipes to 3/8 inches and noticed a large difference, It now sounds deeper mpore throatier. You might get a slight in performance increase too, but that probably will be very minor.

There are several how to files if you are interested. It will take you less than 1/2 hour to do so with a power drill and drill bits.

Hi Guys,

I assume that this is the same for a Street Rod?? Let me get this right, 8 holes in each back plate at that size=no remapping or weak running etc? has anyone heard the Street Rod with this done?

As Eazy says, "yes" but from what I researched on the net, when you do the 8 holes, the max you can go per hole is 1/2 inch. If you go larger then you might have to get the bike re-mapped. I would stay under 1/2 inch per hole. So 8 holes in the upper pipe plate and 8 holes in the lower pipe plate. That is what I did and it sound throatier, but too loud like Thunderheaders.

I tapped the places where I wanted the holes with a Punch for a cleaner look - otherwise the drill might slip and scratch the pipe plate. Don't put too much force when you drill you might go into the outer baffle (I did that). I would stay closer to the center of the pipe plate (I should have done this).

Good luck.
