I tilt my up so it is upright. Helps alittle, and allows for more gas to go in.

Some Pumps really suck at filling up bikes others are fine. I bet you changed pumps and your problem went away.
There is one gas station in town, that I refuse to go to for that very reason.

I have to go a gas station that has separate nozzles for each grade of gas. The bike does not like diluted octane.

The only way you know when it is time to stop fueling is when it sprays back at you making a mess. Is there a special trick to filling it up???

Like you, I had the clean up job too...caused problems...I not look at the gas pump for gallons and take it from there....
