Title says it, doesn't it? I'm not a computer nerd, but I'm no tard either... That said, navigating this site is like trying to explain gender equality to an ***DELETED***... God damned confounding!!!

I have a 2000 FXDWG with about 150,000 miles on it. Seems like every time I ride her, something falls off, or otherwise causes a problem. So, wanting to learn more about my bike and to get her back to a reliable machine I've decided to rebuild her. Problem is, I'm a romantic and not a mechanic.

I have the shop manual (I said shop, not owner's for a reason), and I've got a very strong but general understanding of mechanics. I can and have replaced (on cars mostly) fuel pumps, serpentine belts, timing belts, installed ape hangers and done the wire extensions myself and the like... The question is: how do I know what to replace and what can continue to be used?. E.G. lower engine case vs. a drive belt? I want to get my bike back to reliable. I like to have and can afford better equipment, but I'm not wasteful nor a hot rider either. I do about 10 over the posted speed limit, I don't hammer corners, but I can and do ride long distance. Literally, just yesterday I got home (Eugene, OR) from San Antonio. 2300 miles in under 40 hours. So, I work my bikes, but like an energizer bunny, not so much like Jeffery Dahmer workinig a male prostitute.

My question is where is the best location for me in the forums? What is the best way to go about getting advice on my project with the minimal disruption to other posters?

Hi TBP, good to have u here mate.

You may want to read the rules on the TOP part of this Welcome Area Only.

Also here, this may be of help in regards to the technical stuff.

So where are the PIXs? Of you? Your bike? You and your bike? Your girlfriend? Your girlfriends tele #? Hey, I tried....Take a look around, we have a General HD Chat area, a Techie section where we talk about Audio Systems, Pipes, Oil & Related Stuff, Electrical, Tires/Wheels, and the list goes on…

We also have an area for Trips, Regional Events, Humor, Games, and get this…a Food section to mate.

You name it and we likely have it!

Now, for me regular welcome, see below………

G'day mate,

welcome to HDF.

I will be your tour guide. Be sure to read the manual before posting ok mate?

Or we will have discipline you and if you don't "get it" we will need to discipline you biker style.

Here is a gift for you… LOL! “I so funi!”

Now let’s get serious for your orientation. Go down the hall on your left to the 1st room. No, wait. The 1st room on your right. That is where the commissary is.

Then you will see doors marked for the mortuary, skeet shooting, a room where we make fun of In-Jun bikes, and of course we have a ahh, umm, oh yeah a across the hall.

We had a BOMB MAKING room but, well, ahhhhh, 1 of the guys just didn't understand Blasting Caps very well so..... you know.

We have our own pub .

There are several places where you can familiarize your self with the .

So don't be a wall flower watching others . Get involved.

See you around mate. I am going to the commissary now.

**** ON THE SERIOUS SIDE ****

**** I AM NOT ONE TO GIVE ADVICE ON HOW HDF WORKS BUT… ****
**** AND THE FOLLOWING IS UNOFFICIAL ****

You are in the “New Members Area” where you can introduce yourself and let us know what Harley Davidson bike(s) (if any) you ride/own.

If you have questions about engines, exhaust systems, audio issues, etc… then:

1) Please go to the upper corner and Roll Over “Forums

2) Then come down to and Roll Over “Harley Davidson Tech & Mechanical Forum

3) Then come down to the section that would be most appropriate for your question like Audio Systems, Engine Mechanical Topics, Exhaust System Topics, etc… and CLICK on the topic you have a question about.

You will find the knowledge here is EXCELLENT and these here mates are willing to help you in any way they can. ‘juss be careful. There are some “Trolls”, so I suggest just ignoring them ‘ole farts.

See you around HDF. Come often, we have a humor thread, game thread, and a LOT of other stuff.

Have A Great Day Mate,

BuzzCap7

Welcome to the Forum from Colorado!
Get a FACTORY service manual and start wrenching. These bikes are very easy to work on.

See, that's the thing. I can't even figure out how to reply to this response (if I did it right in the first place), let alone add pictures and the like. Honestly, I don't even know if this will reach the intended recipient or anyone else for that matter! This site is not very intuitive and I just don't have the time to read oogles of pages on how to navigate the site. Is this really it, or may this be the 2% rule in effect? I want to learn about my bike, not Internet protocol...

Welcome from Spartan Country, Michigan!
I tell a lot of new comers to the forum to get: Factory Service manual and the Parts manual. Get a three ring binder and record all your maintenance, repairs, accessories, etc. This will be a great reminder of what was done when. And great material to pass along to the new owner should you sell and upgrade. Also know how large your fuel tank is, and record your fuel usage. I have an app called Simply Auto that I record all my fuel used. I use the odometer and use the fuel gage as reference only. I reset the odometer to zero on fill ups, and I know I can safely get 200 miles on a tank on around town riding.
Good Luck!!
