Hi!
I'm a newbie here who knows nothing at all about bikes so i thought i'd ask some who knows - you all!
I'm writing a novel where my character is a working man who possibly bought an old bike and did it up (is passionate) then had a terrible accident on it where a friend died.
If he's passionate are his feelings about the bike likely to change? Would he quite riding?
Is there a classic model he might have bought to restore?
How would he talk/think about his bike? What terms would he use?
It's only a small part of the book but i'd like to make it authentic...
Thank you ,
Bec
Think about a son that restores his dad's old bike after he dies. Finding it in the barn while cleaning out the stuff before they sale the farm. He is determined to keep his dad's memory a life thru this bike that has covered since the day he ( the son ) was born. His dad gave up riding to work and support the family. Now the son takes up where his dad left off, riding that bike around the country living the dream his dad gave up for him.
( just put me in the 'Honorable Mention' part <grin> )

Welcome to the site Bec. To sort of answer your questions. I say sort of because you'll get as many opinions on some of your questions as there are Harleys.
1. Would he still be passionate about the bike? More than likely. The likelihood is that it would be rider or other driver error that caused the accident and not the bike. It's entirely possible he would quit riding for a while, but if the passion is there, he'll climb back on. Rebuilding the bike would help him get over the accident.
2. Ditto to Oct1949's comments. Most bikers will refer to their rides in female terms, i.e. "she."
3. As for the older type, think Flathead, Knucklehead, or Shovelhead. Those are the classic Harley motors. You'll get a million arguements as to which is the "most" classic, but if you surf the net, you'll find a model/style that you think looks the "most" classic. Once you do that, decide on which you like and go with it. You can't go wrong with any of those.
4. In addition to comments in #2, think of terms like "ride," "bike," "scoot," and "sled" to name a few. Yes, "hog" is used too.
