Hi all, I'm from NC, and though I haven't bought a bike yet, I am shopping and have a few questions. I bought a Super Glide new in '78 and rode it until '91, when I got out of the bike thing for a while. Now the kids are grown, the wife is gone, and I'm thinking seriously about getting a new one. But a lot of things have changed since I bought my first one, which brings me to my questions...
1.) Carb or Fuel Injection? I haven't had any experience with the FI, but the carb on my '78 worked flawlessly for over 50,000 miles. I never turned a screw on it other than to adjust the idle. I assume that FI is the way of the future and that eventually carbs will go the way of the dinosaur, like they have on cars?
2.) Factory alarm. What is it, is it any good, will it help my insurance rates? As I recall, when I had my '78, the theft portion of my policy was the most expensive part of the whole package.
3.) Pricing. Does anybody offer discounts on new bikes, or is it pretty much list + for everything? I know in the past the new bikes were so scarce that dealers could pretty much name their own price, but it seems like supply has caught up with demand some. I did find one dealer here in NC offering $1,000 in parts & accessories with every new bike. But somebody also told me that dealers add on a "setup" fee. Are there any large dealers out there offering discounts that might make it worthwhile to travel in order to get a better deal?
Sorry for all the questions. I'm glad I found this site... I can't wait to do some digging around through the archives!
Factory Alarm is useless unless you go with a bike with hard bags and want to lock them easlily. (only my opinion)
As for pricing, check Heart of Dixie Harley in Pelham AL. Not to far from you being in NC. Most other places in the south will not offer much more than what you've mentioned with the $1000 for acessories. I've heard of so many stories about dealers that will let you walk out the door because of not coming off the price. Good Luck. Keep us informed.
