Default Another new member/handlebar question

Hi all,
I'm new to Harley, as of last summer (04 RoadGlide), and just found this forum a couple of weeks ago. It looks like there's a ton of good info and I've already sent for a couple of upgrades I learned about here. (And even without the tech stuff, the yuks and sarcasm are worth a visit now and then.)
I already fixed the seat problem (too narrow for back seater)with the Sundowner and just ordered the radio speakers because stock ones were lousy. The last major fix I want to make is to bring my grips back about 3 inches. I haven't seen anything much on swapping handlebars and wonder if anyone has put taller bars on a RG?, and if so, which ones? I just found out the new Heritage bars might work. They're reportedly about 3 inches taller, but otherwise very similar to stock RG. Only problem is dealer says all wiring needs extending and cables have to be replaced because there isn't enough slack to reach 3 more inches. That's some pretty big bucks.
Any of you RG guys have any info on bars?
Thanks.
Dan

You should find enough wiring tucked away cope with 3" - there is usually a bit of slack (they call it a "service loop" in the workshop manual") somewhere - on my Dyna its under the seat - you may need to cut a cable tie to release it and pull it through to the front.

As for cables, you may find enough slack by re-routing. You might well need a longer brake hose, but that's a good excuse to replace it with a braided hose.

If you don't mind the bike being off the road for a couple of days, do the work yourself (its not difficult); you will only end up changing what you need to. If you take it to a stealer, they WILL tell you you need to extend everything and charge you for it. Well worth getting hold of a service manual - it will save you a pile of $$ in the long run.

Good luck.

I don't have a RG, but I do have an EG. I put the Wild1 Chubby W0575 bars on my bike, gave me what you are looking for. I don't know if they will work for your application, but they are designed for the cruisers with fairings. I did not have to extend any of my cables, though I have recently placed an order for braided cables with the group buy.

Hope this helps.

TNW,

Mac

I have a Road Glide with stock bars. I can see why you would want to change them. Sometimes I get that kink in my neck and shoulders on long rides and have often thought how nice it would be to gave a couple extra inches (no jokes here Mike) to let me lean back just a little. I know the clutch cable is routed hap hazardly on the Road Glide. I put a couple extra brackets and clamps that your bike should already have. I'm not sure about the extra loop of wiring on your bike. If you are going to try this upgrade yourself be sure you have a Service Manual. They are expensive but it will save you money in the long run. Taking your ignition apart to get to the triple trees can be a real booger

Oh Yeah,
Welcome to the Forum
