How frequent do "things" from the road find their way into your drive belt and cause damage? I recently got my bike out of the shop and they found just that! I noticed that my bike seemed like it was not shifting correctly and experienced some strange behaviors as you can imagine. I decided I would bite the bullet and take it into the shop.
They called me stating that they had found a bolt wedged behind the primary where it was shredding the drive belt. It also Scored the main gear drive and a bearing. They fixed some leaks and replaced some seals while they were in there. $1400.00 later My ride was back on the road. I did give Harley Davidson a hard time about how a bike gets a bolt wedged around the primary!! The service manager reviewed my service file and offered to pay all the labor! Yes they paid the labor and I paid 905.00 for the parts.
After I got home I crawled underneath the bike and noticed a new guard around the belt that I was positive I didnt have before I took the bike in. Nothing was said about the guard. Interesting huh? Thanks to HD I am back on the road again.
Welcome to the forum from Illinois. do you have a gremlin bell? as far as the belt guard goes it almost sounds like they eff'd something up and fixed it without tellin ya, could also be along the same lines of "the bolt in the primary" and thats why they did it labor free. take it back and question it. i had a dealer put take offs on my bike without any notification and i noticed before i left.....that was an interesting arguement we will not get into. glad to hear your back on the road.
I've had similar experiences. I once picked up a rock in the belt that punched a hole in it and and got stuck. It eventually broke the belt. I too had a bolt get wedged between the belt and inner primary shredding it too. Both times my insurance covered it.
