Welcome from SoCal! I am new to this forum also, just bought a 2012 Street glide and could not be happier! Started riding in the mid sixties, had a couple Triumph Bonnevilles at that time, great fun cruising to work on the Pasadena freeway from San Gabriel Valley to Hollywood. I hope you get what you want, by the way thanks for your service.

Welcome! I'm a new rider also, but after taking a MSF course and talking to people who have a lot of riding experience, I went with a 2006 low rider and I am quite a bit smaller than you are. Took a bit of time (3-4 weeks) to get used to it, but now I am glad I went with the dyna. Love the bike!

sportys are fun bikes but with your size you will enjoy anything in the dyna line much better. Look for a used one if money tight that already has stage one done.

If you buy a sporty you will probably be trading it in like most of us in the next year or two which will cost you much more in the long run

Here's my two cents worth...Decide what kind of riding you will be doing. Cruising around town, 1000 mile road trips etc. Take time to talk to plenty of riders for their feedback. If money is a big concern, buy a used scoot. You can save yourself several thousand that way. Try Craigslist. Private sales will save you a bundle over a dealership. As for me, baggers are where it's at. I love the convenience of having a place to carry my gear.

quick edit: Remember, any HD you buy is a "Starter Kit" You WILL want to add your personal touch to it. Ask anybody here.

Welcome Spartan,

I would suggest looking for a used touring series bike like a street glide or a road king to start. Lot's of bikes out there that people bought and did not want to ride. Avoid the dealers to get a good price. Try this site HD4sale.com. I found my low mileage (then) Road King through that site.

Welcome.
A sporty is going to be a bit too small for you. I suggest a dyna. They are like a sporty on steroids. They maneuver and handle similar and are more versatile as far as touring. Jmo
