Here's some food-for-thought for all you guys that regularly check the oil level when hot. I know that's what HD recommends but...
1) Why do you want to burn your hands to check the oil?
2) What is hot? 150, 180, 210, 240... ? It makes a difference.
If you know where the corresponding levels on the dipstick are between hot and cold, why not just check it cold? That's what I do.
Run your bike up to 230-240 degrees oil temp, fill it to the full mark, and then check it again in the morning. Now you'll know the "cold" level that corresponds to 'full when hot' and you'll never have to burn your hands again checking the oil.
