Default Spoke wheel size for Evo Softail

Hi All

I'm wanting to replace the solid rear wheel on my 1999 Softail Custom with a spoke wheel like the Springer. I admit I know very little about wheels and hoping to learn here.

I'm watching Craigslist, Ebay and this forum for wheels, but I'm learning that there are different size axles and wheel sizes. I need to figure out what I can use on my bike.

What size is the axle on the 1999 Custom?

Can I use the rear wheel off of any Harley like a Heritage or Touring model provided it has the same axle and rim size?

I would like to consider a 17, or maybe even and 18 inch wheel to expose more spokes. Is that realistic and does Harley use either size rear wheel on any bike?

I see a lot of new wheels on Ebay for under $200 dollars, are those good wheels?

I'm usually pretty good at this stuff, but I am just plain stupid with wheels. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Beary

If you use a rear wheel from another type frame, you will need to do a fair amount of homework...

For a painless wheel swap, use a rear wheel from a Softail, 1984-1999 (2000 and later is not the same).

Standard, Springer, Fat Boy, Heritage, Night Train...

Spoked wheel or solid wheel, they all use the same axle, spacers, brake disk and sprocket.

Thank you, that is good information. Did Harley make any 17 or 18 inch rear spoke wheels for 84-99 softails?

I don`t know, but I`m one of those old school guys who thinks 16 inch wheels are the only wheels to use, front and rear...

I think the larger diameter rear wheel idea is a fairly recent thing.

Default after market

You should be able to find what you need there are plenty of after market manufacturers out there, a couple things to watch out for is tubless or not and with our with out bearings.. also watch your gear ratio a larger diameter rear will lug the motor at 60-65mph. There are gear ratio calculators online that will help you with that as well.. happy New year...
