Default 2014 engine knocking

This is a fresh thread on my other thread about my engine knocking on my 2014 FLHtK.

The bike is at the dealer now. They started tearing it down Saturday afternoon. I talked to them today and they said the lifters had a lot of play in them. They are definitely going to replace the lifters but are going to tear into the engine more while they are this far to look for other problems.

My question is this...Should I talk to them about possibly just replacing the engine? They bike had 11800 miles on it. All service has been done on time with Amsoil 20w50 in the engine. Only mods are Fuel Moto air cleaner, V&H Twin Slash slip on's and Fuel Pack FP3 tuner. They haven't said anything about not being covered under warranty so I don't forsee a problem there. I really don't want a rebuilt engine in a 1 yr old $28K motorcycle. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

As long as the engine is thoroughly inspected & the cause of failure can be identified, I wouldn't be afraid of an engine rebuild. Sounds like they are trying to be thorough making sure the lifters are the problem or they are looking for progressive damage. If all the required parts are replaced, the engine should be as good as it was before the failure.

If you ever thought of doing an engine upgrade, Big Bore kit or cams now would be the time. If they are tearing it down the labor is covered under warranty.
Good Luck

I would not want a rebuilt engine in a new bike 2 years from now piston rings or something else could go after all some problem made the lifters get play in them.I have my bike in shop also with a knock 1 year old bike. it should not happen the dealer can't even look at mine until 2 weeks.

I got a call from the dealer this afternoon. They are replacing the cylinders, pistons, rings, lifters and oil pump. I asked about the cams and the tech said they looked good. I'm off work tomorrow so I'm going to the dealer to look at everything.

I'm kind of thinking about upgrading the cams. What cams would ya'll recommend for the 103 twin cooled engine?

I'll take a rebuilt engine over a new one any day of the week. Clearances are not measured by the machines on the assembly line.

I'm a huge fan of the Andrews 57H cams. Really made my old 103 come to life

I forgot to update ya'll on what I saw at the dealership. I went to look at all the parts. The pistons had a heavy coating of carbon on them. Both pistons had spots where the carbon had broken off and both cylinders were scored. The heads had carbon but they can be cleaned and the valves looked good. The oil pump was trashed. The cams had some scores on them.

The plan is replace cylinders, pistons, rings, lifters, cams and oil pump. They cylinders and pistons are on back order until May 15. The service manager said he was going to call around to other dealers and see if maybe somebody had some they'd let go.

I talked to the service manager about upgrades and I really like his advice. He said since I've done the stage 1 (FP3, not dealer download) that I got the most bang for my buck. We looked at cams and torque curves and the stock cams in the twin cooled engine is spec'd for torque right at the cruising range. I think I'll just leave it stock. I like the way it runs and pulls with my wife and I on it so I don't see any need to spend the money for something that's really not going to give me that much improvement.

Interesting. Did they happened to mentioned what would have caused all these issues? The thing that catches my attention is the carbon on the pistons. Would oil from the crankcase vent tube spitting into the cylinders have caused this?
