Took the 2015 Ultra Limited in for the recalls. It has 4950 miles. The dealer of course asked me if I wanted the 5K service done for $450.00 I had the dealer complete the 1000 mile service because of the warranty debate. I then stopped into an independent shop at around 3K just to talk to them and price the 5K and 10K to compare to the dealer. They seem like a honest shop and I liked them.
He told me that the 5K service was really just an Engine Oil change and lots of checks and he didn't fell like it was worth the money. Said I should do an oil change right them (3K) another at 6K and then Pay for the 10K as it is more involved etc...Sounded logical so I had the oil changed.
Looking at my 2015 touring model service manual it looks like the Indy is correct. The 5K service shows just engine oil for the fluids. So if I did all fluids at 1K, engine at 3K, 6K, and then 10K along with the Primary and transmission (although it states 20K for that in the manual) it would be more frequent than the service manual states.
The dealer told me yesterday when I dropped of the bike that I would be voiding the warranty if I did have them do the 5K and that ALL fluids needed done at 5K intervals. Sure that would be good but does the warranty follow the service manual or what the dealer would like you to do?

Tell them to pound sand, find another dealer.
I had a dealer tell me the same thing.... and that's exactly what I did.
They CAN require you to do that IF they do the service, parts and labor, for free as a condition of warranty.
Otherwise, it's a scare tactic, and strictly forbidden by federal law.
Look up, read, and understand the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975.
There are no less than 200 threads here on the same subject.
your manual is not that hard to read
it appears that dealer thinks he can read you for a goof
do you change the filter in your refrigerator 4 x as often as manual says
I did exactly that. Changed the oil and filter myself at 5K. I will let them do the 10K service.
Void your warranty? What a crock of $hit. Some of the motorsports companies (BRP) got sued by oil companies because they tried that line on customers who didn't use OEM branded oil. The MFG's lost big time - as long as the oil meets or exceeds the OEM standards, they cannot deny the warranty.
So as long as your oil & filter are changed at 5K as recommended in the manual, they can't deny your warranty.
This seems to be happening more frequent. I would send a E-mail to H-D headquarters just to make them aware of this dealership's poor customer service. I doubt anything will happen but maybe if enough negative comments are sent they will take notice.
