If you have the heading up, the compass works like this:
If the red pointer points up, you are going north.
If the red pointer points south, you are going south.
Here is the tricky part:
If the pointer points right, you are going west.
If the pointer points left, you are going east.
This sounds weird, but in an hour or so, you can learn to adapt to this.
Say the pointer is pointing up and to the right:
You are going north west. North because the pointer is up and west because the pointer is right.
Basically, the N & S works like you expect. The E & W is reversed.
Yes, just like every other "Real Compass" in the world works.
I am one that liked that needle working as a direction indicator like it used too though.
HD made their mistake in making it look like a compass, and a lot of people always thought it was broken then.
They fixed it to work like a real compass, and made those people happy while upsetting all the ones that liked it the way it was.
Most vehicles have a "direction" indicator these days (At least GM vehicles).
It just displays the direction like N, S, E, W, NW, NE, SW, SE though.
If Harley would have just had the system display like most others, it would have eliminated a lot of confusion.
I know you can set one of the data fields to display like that.
But you only get two fields, and I use those for other info.
But as mentioned, once you spend 10 minutes riding with it, you figure it out.
It doesn't get rid of the accept screen, but it goes away on its own after 15 seconds with no action, as opposed to the earlier versions which required you acknowledge the button.
Someone asked earlier - who cares which direction they are heading..and I simply smiled because I always so.
I've found that there are two kinds of people in life; NorthUppers and Map Turners. I'm a NorthUpper, the wife is a Map Turner. I'm betting the preference for the compass works likewise.
