Thumbs down Garmin

This whole navigation debacle has really peaked my interest. I went on Garmin's website to snoop around a bit. The Zumo 395LM is cheaper than our BOOM! Box System by over 900.00 @ retail, it's packed with more features, includes LIFETIME MAP UPDATES!!?? and much more CURRENT update information. . Why did Harley skimp on our nav system so much? ****, the display quality (graphics) on the Garmin is even so much better! WTF??

per garmin website, just a little snippet. .

Keep a Sharper Lookout with Rider Alerts
To enhance road awareness and encourage a safer ride, zūmo 395LM provides helpful alerts for sharp curves ahead, speed changes, railroad and animal crossings, school zones and more. Additionally, you’re notified when you need to check state helmet laws — or when you’re about to drive the wrong way on a one-way street. You also receive alerts for nearby red light and speed camerasš. Plus, for longer rides, a fatigue warning4 will even suggest break times and potential rest areas worth considering after hours on the road. The zūmo Up Ahead feature lets you easily see places of interest and milestones along your route, without leaving the map view on your navigation display. Plus, Easy Route Shaping lets you add a point on the map to adjust your route, so you can ride through preferred areas or follow specific roads.

The grass is often greener on the other side. I had a Road Tech Zumo 550 and I was not impressed by the support staff, the life/longevity of the product and a host of other issues. While you can certainly point to issues with the Boom, I am happy with it. Would I like lifetime updates - yes but it is not a deal breaker for me.

I did check my maps yesterday, and there are new roads that show up that were not there before. So I can say it's a newer map, I just can't say it's the 2018 map with any certainty as there have been no new roads in my area in the past year.

Nevermind, answered my own question.

There are biometric (fingerprint) thumb drives available but they are not cheap. This is actually fingerprinting the thumb drive with the Boom "fingerprint".

To make it easier on bike owners HD or Naviextras should have on the website the same name format as what our bikes read as current.
Having different names is stupid imo.

I have read that after you make a thumbprint of your bike, if you previously bought an update and the current one is the same as the one you downloaded before it will inform you that you already have it.
But if you haven't downloaded anything yet you might pay for the update that you currently have.

It just sucks that it takes basically a year to get a new map to retail. I bought last year's update, MY2017. Which after downloading you find out it is actually from Q2 of 2015. So each model year is basically behind 2 years as far as the maps go. I guess it is only a year since MY 2017 was produced in 2016. My SGS is MY2015 and had Q2 2013 map on it when I bought so I got a 2 year newer map even it was already almost 2 years old. I will go every other year to spread out $150 updates. My question is why don't they offer the new update when the new MY comes out in August of every year? They wait until the end of year when a lot of riders have put their bikes away for the winter.
