I really never understood the "hands must be behind the faring" requirement of some riders, but as Smitty said - to each their own.
Blocking the wind and rain from the hands, gloves or not, really reduces the cold and how wet the hands. Toured for years with no hand guards, but now I can't imagine going back to that. Can ride in 40* without heated grips behind the batwing, but on my naked bike with just a windscreen, no way. Rain behind the batwing keeps the gloves relatively dry. But I get why some don't care either way, I didn't 10 years ago and even then wasn't a "fair weather rider," whatever that term truly means (I mean in know what it's intended as, but seems to always be thrown about in the same manner).

But, can't the bars be lowered on the RG? Just curious if having the bars lower would offer the same protection as a batwing.

Has the increase in heated grips played a part in the new fad of higher bars? I love my heated grips. But everything breaks down sooner or later, and I am to paranoid of person to set my bike up as if it will never fail.

Glad we have choices. I like my bike and risking the money to trial a RG is not in my future. I know I like my batwing so I will stick with that.

I think the big difference between RG and SG is weight. If I am not mistaken RG is the heaviest touring configuration of the three.

I prefer gauge layout on SG versus RG but I prefer awesome headlamps on RG versus SG.

I also like that fork caps are accessible on RG versus SG.

Nice to have choices...

As I read through some of the thoughts and opines herein I can't help but SMH and chuckle because after a lifetime of riding I traded my ZX14 Ninja in on my first old man bike. a Brand new 2022 Heritage Classic and what made it so comfy were these things called "Mini-Apes" from the factory....

But after riding that Heritage for about a year I concluded that I needed some a bit more substantial for serious road trips and decided to trade it in on a touring model and the local dealership told me they'd make me a great deal on a new '23 SG ST (as the RG's were vastly outselling the SG's over the KOTB crap) so I went in and test rode a '23 SG ST. It was a short test ride as I realized the sound system (that I thought would be a cool upgrade over my Heritage) was a waste. Sounded like a static am radio and not worth listening to at anything over 60mph as I also realized it was no quicker than my 114 Heritage w/ KW slip-ons and tuned FP4 but what really blew chunks was coming off the heritages mini-apes to the belly button level handlebars of the '23 SG ST that made me feel like I was steering a trike by comparison as I tossed the fob back to the salesman with a "No Thanks" and that's when the sales manager stepped in an things got wild as he started suggesting RF sound systems and cam, exhaust and such to get the SG ST where I might want it but that added thousands upon thousands and again? "No Thanks" and then he showed me this 2020 SGS with RS 468 cam, Full Rinehart exhaust, 4 speaker/400w RF system and? Comfy handlebars. Puts my hands and wrists right at shoulder level. 14"

I'm kinda hoping this is the last bike I'll ever own because it's set up perfect and BTW? I had double carpel tunnel surgeries 4 years ago and last year I rode this SGS from Port Saint Lucie, FL too Jonesborough, TN and then rode "The Snake" up into Damascus, WV and then back home to PSL, FL. 5 days of riding, 2K miles, Alone. Now what were we talking about? Oh yeah, Fairings! LOL!
