Default Torx or Hex?

Okay, so I go to remove my passenger boards and the top bolt comes out no prob with a Torx 50 bit... but the bottom bolt is in between 40 and 45. So, are these bolts (and all others) Torx or Hex? If they are Hex are they metric or SAE?

Bottom bolt is a 1/4" Hex...Same as the Transmission case bolts.

Top bolt is a 5/16" Hex (this has been the same since 1990's)

Thanks, some reason I thought they all were Torx but that obviously ain't so. I've got a pile of various Hex keys but no socket sets. Home Depot time.

Make sure you use a GOOD tight hex socket. Those bolts were a bitch to get off my RK when I added Floor board extenders. I was afraid of breaking them in the frame. I want to put the extensions on this bike but I will see how tight the bolts are before ordering the parts.

Put spacers on my Ultra and as mentioned they are allen head bolts. And yes I had the same issue w/ the rear one. Hard as hell to remove. I'm thinking locktite was used. Getting yourself a socket wrench allen kit is a good move too. Makes the job much easier.

I did the same, and they were a BIATCH to get off. I was also afraid they would have broken off as they are in there so tight. I ended up using vice grips attached to the hex for better leverage. All four eventually came off.

Air impact wrench with a proper socket takes them right off.
