If all M8's are anything like my Fat Bob 114, then these engines make lots of strange noises. And those strange noises don't translate well to audio or video files.
It makes a chugging sound starting up, sometimes the clutch or something makes noise, there's a constant whine and even when you shut it down it sounds like it's sighing and releasing pressure.
I know this is a softail model thread, but I'll add this for informational purposes. The part highlighted in red, my '21 RKS 114 makes most of those same noises, along with the sewing machine noise. Being a touring model, mine doesn't have the whine since my 114 only has one counter balancer. Mine has a faint squeaking noise at idle, but it sounds more like a squeaky hamster wheel, and is intermittent, doesn't do it all the time. I can't even really tell where it is coming from. I will probably mention it the next time my bike is in for service, but I'm not expecting anything to come of it. I will probably be told it's normal, or they all do that.
[QUOTE=702;20244717]Just for fun, here's another clip of my squeak/squeal. The noise is definitely not the whirring sound that the balancer gears make, but could still be the balancers.
@CPete13 I'm tagging you so you can hear it too since we're both chasing the same evil sound.

It def sounds more isolated on the left side of the engine, ya?
It still sounds like intake whine from the air cleaner to me. The reason I dont hear it on my 107 is that I have a more enclosed air cleaner which silences the intake noise better than the wide open filter on the 114.
And the dealer still refuses to admit there's any problem and won't open up the primary to take a looksie? I'm sure the noise is more apparent in person and even more so comparing two stock bikes side by side...surely the dealer can be reasonable with that, right?

The dealer I deal with hasn't refused to get it in and attempt to figure it out, they simply said it sounded like the balancers when I stopped in to have them listen to it. It has been my decision to get some miles on it to see what happens. I'll perform the 5k service next week and see if there's any oil contamination. If there's nothing obvious, I'll get it scheduled for them to check it out. I already have a case number with customer care and will be persistent. And you're correct, the noise is much more obvious in person versus the sound clips I've posted.

Yep it does sound like that on 702's scooter but it's coming from the left side front , it sounds exactly like that.
So that's either in the primary at the compensator or something like a misaligned primary chain or a bearing seat moving or something weird like that .
Clutching at straws here I know but it's got to be something.
It's almost like the oil is way too light when hot for primary oil and is magnifying the metal on metal sound but I think he's using the right oil.
Did the 5k mile service today. Opened the primary to see if there was anything obvious and inspected thoroughly for any witness marks and found nothing. The primary chain was a tad loose, so I adjusted it according to spec. It made no difference, and the chirp/squeal is still present at idle.
We have a run next weekend and I'll make an appointment for the dealer to have at it the following week.
Update as promised. SQUEAL Better after break-in service. Odd lower end now sounds like a box of rocks. Will wait and see. Nuetral finding a ton better. Thanks again for all comments.
