Default Soundstream PN4.520D Install Questions

Let me start off by saying I am a fairly mechanically inclined guy. However, I am clueless when it comes to car stereo installations but I do have the desire to learn. With that said, I have a few questions regarding the install of this amp.

NOTE: this is going in a '10 SG with the factory HK head unit (for now) and two fairing mounted speakers.

1. The SS instructions indicate, the wires that are currently connected to my speakers (coming out of the stock head unit) should be removed and attached to the "High level" connectors coming out of the amp - correct?

2. Did you purchase matching connectors to the factory speaker wires so as not to butcher the originals? If not, I assume you just splice in to (makes me cringe to think about doing that) the factory speaker connections and reuse them on the output side of the amp (that goes to the speakers) - correct?

3. Is there a suitable power source, I guess gauge wire is a better question, under the fairing? I have a service manual and have checked on the big square plug (the one with the orange end that has the open holes for wires) and its connections. Would this suffice or should I run to the battery for the positive connection?

4. Given I am only running two speakers (for now) will it hurt the amp?

Thanks ahead

Bill

I can't help with the high level input questions, but I can tell you that you will have to run a new fused 8 gauge power lead since there isn't a heavy enough gauge switched one. Do yourself a favor and run a ground wire too, and take both directly to the battery. No harm in running just two speakers. Cut the connectors off the speaker leads, you won't need them any more, but you will need new ones that match the terminals on your new speakers (some aftermarket speakers like the Kappas use a screw and don't need connectors).

Thanks John. After looking at the manual again (the damn type is so small I could barely read it) I realized the High level connectors are for Front L & R so I am good.

That is correct

2. Did you purchase matching connectors to the factory speaker wires so as not to butcher the originals? You can simply use spade terminals like this from autozone to plug into the stock connectors that are now plugged into the speakers to extend your wires to the amp inputs and not have to cut anything. Do not use the black wire in the high level inputs harnesses on the SS amps. Just cut it off or tape it up.

3. Is there a suitable power source, I guess gauge wire is a better question, under the fairing? go directly to the battery with your power and ground wires. Use a 25A fuse and fuse holder at the battery on the power wire. 10ga is more than sufficient for this amp.

4. Given I am only running two speakers (for now) will it hurt the amp?
not at all

Thanks ahead

UlltraNutz,

Thanks so much for the reply. I will be headed off to Auto Zone for some connectors and a fuse housing. The thought of cutting those wires made me a little sick to my stomach. I cannot wait to get this thing hooked up and tested. If this doesn't satisfy my audio tastes, the next steps will be a new head unit and speakers (at present I have the J&L 7 1/4 units). Stay tuned. Same Bat time, same Bat channel. :-)

I finally got the amp installed. It is amazing how much better the stock radio sounds now. This will get me through the summer but I think my next step is going to be a new head unit and some speakers. Thanks to all who provided information to get things working.
