No amp added and I've tried every DSP setting and also set my own treble/bass to no avail. Maybe a better pair of speakers would help.

Is it possible that the HU is starting to distort at or above 27? I can't remember if the unit maxes out at 30 or 40. I know when tuning mine it started to distort at a level that ended in "7". I am not positive if it was 37 or 27 honestly. I am also 8,000 miles away from my bike or I would go check that again.

High volume with low amperage will cause distortion. Just about any hu will cause distortion if turned up to high on the volume. That is why an amp is needed.
