Default CV B52 and HCX 165 Install

Hello all. I am installing my CV B52 / HCX 165 upgrade tomorrow and want to make sure I have everything good to go. My plan is:

1) Stock 6.5 head unit - 3/4 volume, bass/treble set to flat, auto volume control off, bike running
2) BT 355 - set to default settings
3) B52 - set to High Pass
4) B52 - Freq set to 80 - 90
5) gonna use a DMM to dial in gains to 28.3, then fine tune by ear.

Am I missing anything? Thanks

You don't need to do #5. Especially if this is all new to you. Tune it by ear and leave the DMM on the bench.

I agree with Bates and just tune it by ear. If it sounds tinny let me know as I can walk you thru tweaking the line leveler.

Hey Joe, I’m considering the same setup, same bike. Looking forward to hearing how it meets your expectations. Also wondering if you needed to do anything to the grilles. Been reading that the hog tunes or Harley domed grilles might be necessary. Thanks and good luck!

Went with basically the same setup on mine. I started with the HCX 165 speakers and ended up replacing them with Infinity Kappa 62ix. The HCX165 speakers sound very nice, but at speed the Kappa's cut through the noise better. Either way you could very well be happy with them.

I also agree, skip step #5. I attempted to do the same thing with bad results. Much easier to tune by ear.

PigsInZen,

I did the install today. Let me tell you, this thing is loud. Sounds awesome. I did use the DMM to set the gains and then finished by ear. My parts list consisted of:
HCX 165 speakers, CV B52 amp, BT 355, aftermarket grills (you will need them), amp install kit, and Harley accessory power y adapter $10 Part #69200921 (it's a purple and black wire that will split off your stock accessory plug. Use the purple wire to connect to your amp remote turn on). Also, Velcro to secure to amp tray. All for about $450.

I also found the sticky "Setting Amplifier Gains" at the top of the Audio forum very helpful for setting gains and getting a test tone. Here is the link: https://www.hdforums.com/forum/audio...ier-gains.html

Good luck. I think you will be very happy, I know I am!

Joe and Skrimps, have you experienced any loss of FM reception with this setup now? Thanks

I had read about the amp possibly causing FM reception issues and that was a concern of mine, but I did not have any noticable FM interference/loss after installation.

Hey Joe, if it’s not too much trouble, could you share the brand/model of the grilles you ended up using? I’m leaning toward the plain looking Hog Tunes ones if they’ll work, because of the idea below. (Thanks so much for the awesome parts list... I never would have known to use the Y adapter.)

I’m probably getting ahead of myself, but I’m thinking that it might be possible to cover the grilles with speaker cloth for added water protection. I have a long trip planned this summer and we always end up finding a rainstorm. I came across this Scosche cloth for only $17 that’s both acoustically transparent and hydrophobic.

Here’s a link to it on Amazon:

If I end up doing so, I’ll share it on this forum. I did a quick search for “Scosche” but didn’t find any posts about the cloth. Admittedly, I didn’t read every thread.

I was going to use the hogtunes grills but then a buddy of mine who recently installed a Rockford Fosgate kit had extra grills from that kit available. I just took off the little branding sticker. The Rockford kit comes with both Street Glide and Road Glide grills and he only needed the Road Glide ones. They are very similar to the hogtunes so I think you can't go wrong with those. I also considered speaker cloth but did not do it in the end.
