I've been doing a bit of research and a lot of reading concerning audio set ups for my Harley. I am new to motorcycle audio (do's don'ts etc.) Based on what I've read and the tips you all have given, I'm steering clear of BOOM!. I want a great sounding system. I listen to metal, rock, blues, oldies, and some country. Want a well balanced set up for that. Looking for great fidelity at mid to high volumes with minimal distortion, not looking for deep bass or anything of that sort (all things relative, of course I still want to hear a kick drum). I ride a 2015 Ultra Limited with completely stock audio. Here's what I'm thinking of getting: the Focal FDP Sport Amp, (going to run 4 channels, one to each 4 ohm speaker- no need to run speakers in parallel or bridge amp channels here if my understanding is correct?) My speaker selection would be: Hertz MPX 165.3 Pros for the fairing, and Polk MM1 Series 6502's for the tour pak. I am intending on leaving the factory head unit in place. With that said, I have several questions> Do I need to have my factory head unit EQ flashed to FLAT and head unit amplification turned off? What kind of bracket will I, or can I use to mount the amp? Do I need to think about a DSP, or are the frequency filters on the Focal amp going to be sufficient for my purposes? Kind of cloudy on how the Focal amp will receive the input signal. I've spent some time on their site and it looks like Focal gives you the input AND output harnesses that with plug right in to the Harley Molex connectors. Next question; and probably most important to me:
Can I use the existing Harley wire runs to all the speaker positions? It would be totally bad *** if so. Has anyone mounted the Polk MM1's in the tour pak, and the Hertz MPX 165.3's in the fairing? If so, any modifications required to get them to fit? Will they work with the included grilles, or is it a no-go based on how the Hertz grilles would have to attach to the speaker rim being captured behind the fairing and all? The MM1's seem like a great fit for the tour pak pods. Also, should I get the MM1's WITH the external crossovers? Or, can I rely on the signal processing of the amp to do the bulk of the frequency filtering? (I realize I'm probably splitting hairs wanting to have my cake and eat it too). Not even sure if the external crossovers that come with the MM1's would be able to fit in the pods with the speakers. My guess is "NO". Lastly, what else am I overlooking here? Seems like it's a little too easy on paper, and I'm probably leaving out some important things. Any and all help is GREATLY appreciated! I've done a lot of reading in the forum over the last couple weeks. You guys rock, and I'm glad to have the help of such a knowledgeable group of audio gurus
