Well coming into work today on the highway I had the tunes cranked a tad and all of a sudden my left front Kappa sounded really bad..look down and the mid/tweeter is bouncing on the woofer..Well they did last a couple of years anyhow. Would like to order a set of replacements today but thought I might check in here and see what everyone is recommending..My setup has changed since I purchased the Kappas when the bike was new. I have a 17 RGS with Sony XA5000 head unit, Biketronics 4180 amp, the front Kappa's as mentioned and Hogtune lids with 6x9's. On the highway I like to hear my music..any suggestions?
I'm not sure how well they will work with the BT amp, but the DB drive Gen 2 have some good reviews. Also the MMATS Pa601.4cx is worth a look.
I've got the DB Drive Gen 2's in my ride, and just did an install on an EG Ultra Limited using the PA601cx last week. Of the two, my ears like the MMATS better. Much better SQ and clarity in my opinion. The DB Drive's will handle more power and have a higher sensitivity rating, thus play louder, but you don't need as much on a bat wing.
Regardless of whether you go with the DB Drive or the MMATS, you'll need to cut a relief hole in the RG speaker pods to clear the magnets. My point above on the bat wings, is that you don't have to push a ton of power through the fairing speakers to get adequate volume at speed. The PA601cx are power rated lower than the DB Drive, but I didn't have to push a ton of power to the MMATS. On a bat wing the speakers are pretty much in your face and tucked behind a protected pocket of fairly quiet air between the fairing and the rider. With that said, I can't make any claims on how well the MMATS will handle the increased power required on a RGs to get adequate volume at speed.
The power handling specs on the MMATS are; 100 Wrms – 150 W Program The power handling specs on the DB Drives are; 175 Wrms - 400W Peak (claimed). These aren't published online yet, but that's what the product card shipped with mine said.
Eggwhite installed the PA601cx in his RG and he seems to be really happy. They are a great sounding speaker, and construction quality is top notch.
The DB Drives in my RG will handle all the power I care to throw at them, and sound decent doing so. However, to my ears the MMATS are a better sounding speaker. No comparison really. I can say the same for construction quality. The MMATS are flawless.
On my 2009 FLHT, I have the G2's in my fairing and the MMat 601.cx's in my lowers. My amp is the BT4180. The G2's play loud/clear, but the 601.cx's play a more fuller sound with a bit more thump. They certainly don't play as loud. They compliment each other quite well. That said, in your RG, with the speakers a bit further away, I'd try the G2's. My .02
