Default Sena 20s + Sony XAV-AX7000 = a problem

I've got a 2018 Road Glide Ultra and just swapped-out the head unit with the new Sony XAV-AX7000. With the old stock head unit I used a Sena 20s headset paired with my iPhone8 to take/make phone calls via Bluetooth & played music off my phone via the hardwired plug & thru the fairing speakers. With the Sony unit plugged in to the USB jack, I get Apple CarPlay, all the apps - like Google Maps navigation, and music (stored or streaming from Pandora or Spotify), and I get text message notifications. The problem is that while the iPhone is Bluetooth connected to my phone, the phone will NOT stay Bluetooth connected to my Sony XAV-AX7000 and the microphone will not pickup my voice to answer calls, make calls, or to use voice commands with the phone or head unit. With the phone UNplugged from the Sony XAV-AX7000, music streams thru my headset & voice commands work but Apple CarPlay (and things like navigation) are gone. While I know Apple CarPlay will not work via Bluetooth & requires a hardwired connection, I don't know why I can't get the Sena 20s to connect while so I can use voice while Apple CarPlay is connected. BTW, I tried to Bluetooth connect the Sena 20s directly to the Sony head unit, but it would not pair.

This may be a dumb question since I’m not familiar with that hu, but why have the phone connected to the hu by USB and Bluetooth?

He did not state that he has the phone connected to the headunit via Bluetooth.

Headunit and Phone via USB
Phone and Headset via Bluetooth

I have essentially the same setup In my Ram. the phone call comes in via Carplay, but I can switch it over to my BT headset via the source option on the iPhone call screen.

I am really wanting the ax-7000 for Android Auto connection and being able to use the Google Maps navigation instead of the lame HD Nav. I've read and talked to FatHeads that the ax-7000 won't connect to wireless headsets, like my Sena 20s EVOs. This is a deal breaker for me. I understand that streaming nav and music from the phone to the HU is via USB and Android Auto and I just have to pair the 20s to the phone, but anything that originates on the HU, like the XM receiver, won't come over the Sena's - only out of the speakers. I personally don't listen with the speakers simply because it can't be heard most of the time.

Has anyone be able to pair a wireless headset with the Sony ax-5000/7000/8000 or other similar head unit? I really want to confirm this prior to purchasing.
TIA

Question

as I have the same question regarding a planned upgrade to the SONY

isn't this essentially the existing problem of the Boom/BT headsets/Freewire or WHIM?

you cant BT headset direct to the head unit
you have to use the WHIM or 7pin Din connected Freewire
you only get Car Play with a physical USB connection not BT (and NO Android Auto)

Currently I have my Android BT to the Boom and my SENA 20S EVO BT to my Freewire, so call routing occurs correctly (with contact info appearing on the screen and call routing to the headset)

Like you, I want better Android compatibility and Google maps/other is a must! (versus paying 120bucks per year for an out of date naviextras map)

BUT I also want to know can you run a long USB to the saddlebags with the SONY? as I don't want my phone on the bars (and Fat Head Cycles said in a YouTube that long usb extensions are a no)

You are correct in your statements. I don't have Freewire, I have the WHIM. The USB only for AA/Carplay are limitations of Google and Apple. It is that way for all my head units in all my vehicles. The main thing I'm looking for is the ease of Google Maps. I've worried about the USB cable length too. My fairing has the slot next to the radio for a phone, but of course it isn't wide enough to fit a modern smart phone. HD is so behind the times. No wonder their stock and sales are plummeting. The people at Crutchfield also confirmed the inability to connect a headset to the AX-5000/7000 because it doesn't support the HFP/HSP protocols for BT. Guess we're stuck with what we have.

i may have got that answer for us: Sony XAV-AX7000 announced - (XAV-AX5000 upgrade)
take a look at BlkDragon answers to my earlier questions today. He is using a BT headset with his phone, which in turn is USB to his Sony XAV-AX70000

like you Google Maps or better is what I'm really after. Also the ability to pull up contact address details from my phone and Navigate to them (which my Boom doesn't seem capable of)

The Jukebox media compartment is a joke. its designed for 'my-first-smartphone' from 2012, and not the monsters we have these days...
I've got my Freewire, cables and USB flash memory for music, in mine. No chance of getting a Pixel XL in there (even if I took all that out!)

...agreed, the Boom! is WAY behind the times (even the new GTS which I certainly won't be coughing 2.5K for!)

while Crutchfield are correct in what they say, that's the exact same reason we cant BT headset to the Boom without the WHIM or the FREEWIRE, so we work around it by adding them or going via another route

Connecting to my phone with a headset works just fine. I do that all the time with my HD Branded EVO's or a regular bluetooth ear piece. Want I want to do is connect to the head unit, the AX7000, so anything that originates there can be heard in the headset. For example, if I put my SiriusXM receiver on the AX7000, I'll only hear that through the speakers, not a headset. Same with FM or USB connected thumb drive for music.
Here's how I think it would be set it up:
EVO 20s connected to Phone via bluetooth for calls or media streaming alternative
EVO 20s connected to passenger / other bikers EVO 20s for intercom
Phone Connected to HU via bluetooth -OR- via USB for android Auto. AX5000/7000 can't be connected via blue tooth and USB at the same time.
What would be missing:
all display info from stock HD Boom! - oil pressure, EITMS, temp (not a big loss)
CD interaction (I do use my CB for group rides with bikes that have it and no other comms, like a SENA)
Bike Intercom - not a big deal really. EVO direct intercom is better IMO.
Inability to connect a headset to AX5000/7000 for off head unit output.
What would be gained:
Android Auto full functionality via USB
Google Maps easy of navigation (with HU display via AA)
XM radio on the cheap ($40 for receiver instead of $400 for HD receiver) and this on has the high bandwidth receiver as well to support live traffic and weather alerts!
Anything else you can think off??

I recently ran a 10 ft cable just to see if it'll work. And it does. I have the same problem not being able to use my sena 20s for voice navigation. Other than that it works great. I ran it under the tank and seat came up behind the backrest and over the top to where the lid of the trunk closes .now my phone stays out of the weather. cable is only visible when the trunk is open. I used a braided cable with hopes of it lasting thru the heat and what not. Hope this helps. Btw, I have a 2014 limited flhtk.
