Hey there - I am looking at a 2015 Ultra Limited and it appears in really good shape with low miles, but the issue is the Boom Box 6.5 unit needs replaced. So I have a few questions and any help would be much appreciated.
Is there a quality aftermarket replacement option, that can be easily installed?
Is buying a used Boom Box and installing it an option?
Lastly, is a scrolling screen on the Boom Box a sign of other electrical issues?
As far as aftermarket replacements, you have Sony 5000 or 7000. Not really waterproof more water resistant. The only function of the thumb controls are volume and station/track change. Around $700 with the control module.
Yes you can put a used 6.5 back in it. You can figure about $325 to buy one.
You could really step up the game by putting a new GTS model radio in it. About $1600.00
The scrolling screen shouldn't be anything but the head unit and not indicative of any other problem.
Thanks DSM...that answers all of it. I was looking for a Sony 7000 but not with the supply shortage, they are like finding a Unicorn. I watched a video on Youtube from Fat Head cycles on the 7000 and they had a package that basically makes it plug and play, but of course...out of stock!
Thanks - the current owner called HD dealer and they basically said it needs replaced. I presume they walked him through a factory reset before they told him that.

If he decides to use a pre owned GT, I do have one I removed to go with the new GTS. I could ship for $300. Layed
Go Sony XAV-AX7000 (Fat Head Cycles), you can do all the work yourself!
wrap the unit in plastic draw-lining and waterproof tape and you'll have a waterproof setup. Thoroughly tested here in the on/off rains of England
Thumbs give you volume, source, forward / back, album skip, screen black out, attenuate
and those last two options are a massive plus over the 6.5 inFRUSTATION system my bike had
add to that you can use any up-to-date map source you want to use and that was my reason for switching.
I heavily researched the GTS, and after much sage advice that often focused on the waterproof plus, I'm kinda glad the MotoCo UK wouldn't sell us nor help us
retro-fit, as I now find the Sony interface more feature rich than what my buddy has on his GTS (and without the additional costs and faff of involving the dealer)

That's interesting HB. I didn't realize that thumb controls could allow you to change sources. I'm not looking to swap my head unit at the moment but if it ever died I might be interested in the Metra double din upgrade for my pre-Rushmore bike.
What blackout and attenuate functions you mentioned? I've never heard of those.

push Left HOME in and it flicks through source (Tuner, SiriusXM, USB1, USB2, BLUETOOTH)
push Left Home right or left, and it skips forward and back through tracks
Blackout is technically MONITOR OFF hold the 'i' button on the right and the monitor will blackout. This continues to play the source. Which is excellent for night riding and not burning your eyeballs out in the dark. Something the 6.5GT couldn't do
hold the right 'back' button in and it will ATTENUATE, or kill the volume...you can still hear it, but it goes from LOUD to next to nothing, which means you can talk to someone at the lights or not make a pratt of yourself when entering a venue with the best of the Bee Gees blaring at full volume. press it again and previous volume level returns and you are back to listening to Night Fever by Barry and the boys push the right 'back' button right or left, and it skips forward and back through tracks (I think, I usually use the left joystick for this) but up and down and it skips albums.
also, another thing to help your waterproofing.... as fitted this very evening. The 309 Custom Audio Shroud. Available for Street Glide or Road Glide.
If you ever see how much water gets in your wing, you will be amazed! so this has gotta help my already wrapped radio (which I havent had a problem with since it was wrapped in IKEA plastic draw-lining
