Default Upgrading the '05

This is what I have ordered so far:

HK head unit, previously serviced by Iron Cross
Non-ultra overlay harness
Lower fairing speaker boxes, grills and hardware
Lower fairing speaker connectors
4 Polk MM651 6.5" speakers
Adapter rings for the upper fairing
Acoustic inner fairing speaker pads
Arc Audio KS 125.4 amp
Arc Audio XXD 4980 amp
2 Arc audio amp harnesses for Harley
Hogtunes dash trim tweeter speakers
Boom Audio saddlebag speaker system
Primed saddlebag lids

I'm thinking I might need to get the rear speaker switch, but I'm not sure if it's a requirement or a luxury. What problems could I expect? I know about trimming the speedo and tach housing 1/2" if I use the 125.4 in the fairing. Anything I'm overlooking?

man you pretty much got it nailed down here. that xxd 4980 is an old discontinued amp so be aware of that.

couple of things I'm confused about;
1.) whats the purpose of the non-overlay harness unless you're adding iPod, XM, etc.?
2.) not sure what the rear switch would be used for. WHat it's used for on the Ultras is front position turns all speakers on, middle is all speakers and headsets, and rear position is headsets only.

Agree with UN; you don't need the $100 non-Ultra overlay harness if you are adding only the added speakers. You can accomplish what you want by purchasing the 35 wire position connector and sockets for the speaker ends for about $30. Also, the nuoh is a huge harness and will take some work to route it so the fairing goes on easily.

Even if you plan to add an IPod module, not using the nuoh won't matter since there is.no provision for it on the harness.

Also, the nuoh connects to the 6B connector on the interconnect harness. It has a 6 position connector while the same connector on your bike is a 3 position connector. This difference is irrelevant If all you will do is add rear speakers.

If you want to do a neat job of connecting to the rear speaker connectors on the nuoh, you'll need to buy mating parts as used on the Ultras- easily available from HD.

Good luck with tour project.

I was under the impression that the harness was required to connect the rear speakers to the head unit and I believe I remember reading that I would not have to purchase the pins/connectors if I used the harness. I could be mistaken on both accounts. However, the instructions for the Boom Audio Saddlebag Speaker Kit say:
"Unless one has already been fitted as part of another Advanced
Audio kit installation, separate purchase of a Radio Harness
(Part No. 69200106) or Non-Ultra Overlay Harness (Part No.

70169-06A) will be required."

As we all know, Harley would NEVER suggest that we purchase an overpriced item that is unnecessary.

Is the speaker switch not required to complete the circuit on the harness to the rear speakers? I thought that's how the circuit was set up. I do plan on adding the iPod connector eventually, but apparently the harness won't matter for that. Also, I may want the option of adding the tour pack speakers later on.

I was told the XXD 4980 is not available and I will receive the XXD 5080 instead. For $100, I figure it's worth taking a chance.

What mating parts will I need to connect the speakers/amps? I'm trying to picture the setup in my head, with very little luck.

Thanks for your help.

Do you have audio wiring diagrams for your bike and the '06 and newer models?

I'll have to check my computer. I was using the '05 Ultra Classic and the saddlebag speaker wiring diagram.

What I was thinking and again, I could be totally wrong, is that without the amps, everything would plug directly into the overlay harness (as I ordered the lower fairing speaker wires and the saddlebag kit comes with connecting wires). If this is the case, then I need to make or buy connectors from the harness to the amps and amps to the speakers. I'd like to make this install as clean as possible. I think a lot of my questions will be answered once I get the parts and take the bike apart, but it takes so long to get parts, I'm trying to plan ahead. I'd like to be able to do this with one teardown and not have the bike out of commission while I wait for unexpected parts.
