I would suggest getting new speakers when you decide on an amp cause you probably just ruined those JLs using them without an amp.

Why would it ruin the speakers with out a amp??? I've never heard of not a running a amp hurts the speakers and I've had plenty of different car audio in my other hot rods

Nothing wrong with running them off the sony. The stock head unit is set up for 2 ohm and ya would need to get into high distortion levels to get any volume out of 4 ohm speakers. To bad ya stuck with 5.25" instead of 6.5" on the speakers. I had C2s but blew one with my jl xd400/4 amp and went with some polks (don't really sound better, I'll see how they hold up?). I don't like the pbr 4 channel because it runs hot and isn't stable under 4 ohms or the soundstream nano because of FM problems. I'm happy with my xd400/4 in the fairing but if ya leave your tour pack on ya can mount about anything under it like the cvos. There are a couple of other small amps out there that would work in the fairing too but I forget what they are??? Don't get old and sick???

and mine and many others.. this FM issue has been resolved and in the beginning it was simply hit or miss whether it caused problems.

haven't seen a batwing fairing that an xd400 will fit into without cutting off parts of the amp.
