Default Feedback in speakers

Hey Fellas,

So I have a few questions and the best place to come is here. I have a Boss (I know junk but got it for free) 500w Amp under my fairing. I have a horrible whine / howl coming through my speakers when I turn on the bike. But if the bike is off and just stereo playing it doesn't have it. Any ideas?

Also I am looking to go to either the RF PBR 300x4 or the Kenwood Excelon XR 400x4. I have Kicker 6.5", Kicker 1" and Kicker 6x9" in the lids. Which amp would be better? I hear the RF amp gets way to hot and haven't heard much about the kenwood amp. Thanks guys

are you using RCA inputs or speaker level inputs?

this sounds like a bad ground or a ground loop.
Check your ground to make sure it's good and solid.
if using RCAs, go to a local audio store and pickup a ground loop isolater.

As for the RF amp getting hot, the PBR300x2 was never an issue, it was the PBR300x4 and to my knowledge they've resolved that some months ago.

The kenwood amp will not fit in the fairing. It's 8.34" wide by 8" deep by 1.75" tall. The depth is what's going to prevent you from installing it in the fairing.

IMO you'll need a 4 channel amp if you want to maintain fading abilities. Unfortunately 4 channel amps small enough to fit in the fairing are going to 1.) cause FM interference with Class D amps or 2.) be expensive to go a different route such as Arc Audio's Class H amps. Call Kevin @ Dragonfly Cycle Concepts and he'll hook you up with the Arc stuff at a good price. If you don't care about FM reception, then SS PN4.520D for the 4 channel amp.

If you don't care about fading, then a 2 channel 2 ohm stable amp will work also such as the PBR300x2. Just wire your speakers in parallel (+ to + and - to -) and tie to amp outputs. Again if you don't care about FM, SS PN2.350D for the amp.

I am using speaker level outputs. I had heard that it could be because the power line is to close to the speaker lines and that is why I was getting the feedback. I also have a RCA output box that the local stereo shop had given me to use basically the same as high level out puts but you use the RCA cables.

I was looking to use a 4 channel cause of all the speakers I have running but you are right everything that I have been finding is pricey (momma wont have that with a new baby on the way). I don't really care about the FM cause I use a IPOD anyway (if that is what you mean).

The SS amp that I was finding looks huge you sure that fits?

SS PN4.520D fits perfectly. Put them in all the time..

and yes sir that's what I meant. If you have any desire to listen to FM this amp is not for you.

So I have those kickers as speakers. I had always used kickers back in the day in my car. You got any suggestions on better speakers?

on a 13' glide.. Unless your speakers are toast, I'd leave them as is for now with the exception of adding polyfil to the fairing speakers. 3 layers of the thin stuff from walmart in a 12x12" square wrapped tightly around each fairing speaker. It will stay in place.

That SS amp is plenty of power to wake those puppies up. If after you get it together and decide you want a better speaker, I'd drop a set of Biketronics BT7P1 7.1" speakers in the fairing and wrap them with polyfil before closing it up. I think you'll find those 6x9s work fairly well on that SS amp.
