Ok before you tear into it the hole looks like it was cut deep enough that plug should have been a short reach since she's dual plugged, PO screwed up putting the long one in by mistake, doubt the engine hurt.

I never would have picked up on that through the picture.. Nice catch TwiZted.. but then again with the shovel motor I'm still in the learning stage..

Bit of experience with these and dual plugs. My 72 heads had one each, long & short as the OEM heads are on the thin side between the pushrod tubes and it varies a bit in later year heads. My S&S heads are both long reach.

Way you can tell is look at the plug and the carbon on the last few threads threads, it was sticking down into the combustion chamber a ways.

OP look for NGK replacements they fit well in this kinda situation.

thanks for the input, and yes a shorter plug is definitely in order.
I bought this from a seller on ebay who recieved it from a mechanics widow. It's likely the guy I bought it from pit those plugs in without realizing what he was doing.
anyway, I had to satisfy my curiosity and pulled the head. I have one odd pushrod, which isn't encouraging, but not the end of the world. The good news is the cylinder measure out really nice, so it might not be a basket case.

not thrilled with the scoring, but I don't think they're bad enough to warrant re-honing.

This is the fourth motor I've bought on ebay, the first three were terrific, with no issues.
the seller got the motor from a shop owners widow. I'd have to look up his name, but he was aparently a successful shop owner in Michigan I think.

Nothing wrong with being thorough, not sure why he used copper head gaskets there and high tack to seal it, those aren't hi comp pistons. May as well pop the other and change them both to cometic MLS gaskets including the rocker boxes & base gaskets while your this far into it. Less headaches later.

I looked into that and S&S recommends the sealant with their copper gaskets for the 3 5/8" bore in their installation instructions.
I think I'll just clean and re-use this one, the motor hasn't been run so the gasket should be fine.
I'm going to leave the rear alone, since now I've seen the front and nothing there looks bad.

Used coppercoat on copper head gaskets before not hightact and I have reused them after being torqued but I always annealed them first. Old BSA's had copper head gaskets.
