Well Mike, The thing I always try to keep in mind, is with that smaller sprocket on the front, you're quickly revving the motor up and keeping it revved up (like sustained riding on the highway).....if you're gonna do that, you need to ensure you have chromoly push rods. I kinda regret not upgrading the lifters while I was at it, along with the oil pump. But ya know what? It's working FINE, but if I would have re-used the stock pushrods, I'd be a little uncomftable...waiting for the sound of a bent one rubbing on the pushrod tube.

On my rigid, the sporty motor started life as an 883, but "someone later on" punched it out to 1200 ("a 74" ) now:

I went the other route on this, I have kept the bike VERY light, and the pipes are drags with drop in baffles that I cut down to 2 inches long, and with needle nose pliers I straightened the baffles out. Since the baffles will never FULLY close they do still stick out a little bit, and when you hold them up and look through them, it's like looking through a glasspack muffler...they stick out just a tad. This gives me the backpressure needed, but, they are alot louder! The stock CV is ready for retirement, and there's a guy a eBay that custom builds CV's, where he polishes the guts, and sets them up to work PERFECT. I will be throwing one of them on, and then she'll be done. I can ride her now, as long as you don't use more then 1/2 throttle. I know, I know....I could fix the old carb, but I want the custom one. More power and just work better. Anyway, with only 1/2 throttle, the 74 can really push this 400 Lb. bike around, even with my 230 Lb. a$$ on it.

Lastly, Mike, we have got to get others on this thread talking about their "trials and tribulations" in the hopped up Harley world. I need to learn about some other combos....so if you're reading this, PLEASE take the time and chime in.

~Joe

I rode my 93" shovel very hard for 10 years. That was the bike i was proving to a lot of bros.just how quick a Harley can be.It had all the good stuff. Now a lot of years later cubic inches is the route I choose. Most people have no clue how fast a Harley can be,totally built, including trans, drives, gearing, and a proper tune. Not to mention the Madman straddling the beasts. You can own the quickest bike on the planet, but without a big pair of boys you might as well leave it parked. For me win or lose, it has always a passion just to be around hot rodders.Mike

I was always curious about those monster hot rod engines durability... It would be great to have 120hp Harley* but if it needs new pistons/rings/head gasket/lifters/etc. evrey 20k (30,40k...) miles or so it doesnt make any sense for me. I`m seriously thinking about buing S&S or Ultima engine for my FXR but again - I`m worry about durability. I use the bike as daily ride (with some long trips) so troublefree running is quite important.

*HELL my Evolution has probably around 70 hp - stage 1- Mikuni 42mm, drag pipes, progressive suspension (hot rod for small budget ) it would be great to have 80 hp bike

You certainly do want to go smaller on motor sprocket. My S&S 124 left primary stock, but upped the trans sprocket from 32 to 34.The motor has plenty of bottom end,and it really helped when cruising the turnpikes. The big motors are as reliable as stock simply because they do not have to work as hard. The bottom line to longevity is Maintainance!!!!!
93" Shovel built right can be a blast to own.I owned my 93" for over 10 years and it saw some serious hot rodding. All it ever needed was a top end job after 7 yrs.
