I have a softail chopper with a 2000 Evo engine, low mileage, S&S Super E carb, and straight pipes. I’m having what I believe is an electrical issue. The bike starts easily, and when I gently roll on the throttle, it usually responds as it should. But when I give it a quick twist of the throttle, it cuts out. I originally thought it was a fuel issue, but I’ve checked that entire system, rebuilt the accelerator pump, and that doesn’t seem to be the problem.
When I switch it on before starting, the speedometer light flickers. When I’m riding, the headlight surges as I rev the engine. I’ve checked the battery, battery connections, and other wiring to ensure I don’t have a short. The bike is very low mileage, and the Dyna S ignition is very new. Can anyone give me some things to check? Thanks in advance for you help.
Check your charging system(stator/voltage reg.) Also, Your accel. pump in you s&s might need adj. If you put in a new pump.make sure it seated properly
The light flickering with the bike not running makes me think a bad electrical connection somewhere for that light.
The headlight surging: not sure what you mean.
As you come up in rpm, does the light just get brighter or get brighter and dim and bright again? That could be a bad connection or a failing voltage regulator. I don't know what kind of voltage protection your ignition has but if the voltage regulator is failing and the voltage goes too high, it will cook your ignition module.
With the bike running and a volt meter on the battery terminals, slowly increase engine speed to 2500 or 3000 rpm while watching the meter. If the voltage is getting in the high 14's or more, the regulator is not controlling the voltage.
Dyna ignitions are sensitive to EMI so be sure the spark plug wires are carbon core like
SE ones from HD. Don't use spiral core - I found out the hard way. Dyna also states that
in their install info.
