Ahh - lightbulb - duh - feeling stupid now :-). Lived on a sailboat for 13 years, but never put 2 & 2 together to realize it as also galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals on the bike. Kind of makes me wonder why they dont put a sacrificial zinc on the bike. I love learning new stuff after a a great morning breakfast ride - sweet :-)
They do. They sacrifice all those zinc plated fasteners, lol. Then most everyone runs to the dealer and buys the chrome bolt kits. Then what you learn is that as soon as you torque a chromed fastener you crack the plating where the tool meets it, then you have a nice shiney chromed outside along with a nice brown center. Go stainless everywhere you can.
Remove white corrosion from chrome left behind from factory bolts
There is some great information here but it's missing one thing, how to remove that white corrosion the factory bolts leave behind when you change you bolts to SS, vinegar 5%(acetic acid). Yes, the same vinegar that you but at the grocery store or your wife has in the kitchen. Saturate a Q-Tip and rub it on the corrosion and let it soak for ~15 min.. It make take a couple of applications but it will take it off and your chrome will look as good as new. I wish someone would have posted this info. when I started my bolt replacement project.
I purchased a polished SS bolt kit from Alloy boltz out of Florida, ~$55 for the whole kit, others are asking up to $300. You can also purchase the "Show" polished SS bolt kit where they polish off the knurl. You can buy they from their web site but it was a little cheaper off e-bay. PS, most strongly suggest using anti-seize when going stainless.
