Putting pressure on the shift lever before letting off on the throttle?

There is nothing accomplished by doing that.

There is no need for any fancy lubes, or silly shifting routines if the shift linkage, levers, clutch and clutch cable are properly adjusted.

Let off the throttle and pull in the clutch lever simultaneously, and give a healthy effort on the shift lever.

OP,

It sounds like you may not be moving the shift lever far enough, make sure the heel lever is not contacting the floorboard.

Also, inspect the shift lever at the transmission, make sure it is tight on the shifter shaft.

I appreciate all the advise. This is my third Harley including 46,000 on a V rod. Also a few Jap bikes. I must admit I never had this problem before. This just started out of the blue over about 2 months about once a week then progressed. . I keep on thinking I was miss shifting maybe because I was tired or not pay attention. Till this situation there was not a day in 20 years that I didn't curse the Harley for its Neutral including the present 2013 Street Bob.. Well I am gaining on it. It still goes into neutral while shifting, only a few times a day. Sort of getting used to it. Maybe at some point I will pull the clutch cable and also clutch release cover. Its such a pain. Including removing the muffler pipe. Something must be holding the shift mechanism back as it goes to second . You figure.
I am hoping some one reconize or has had the same problem and suggest a fix.

Checked out the shifter lever at transmission. Very tight. Moves very freely.

I have mid controls. Very free at joints. They actually spring back at you filp the foot switch lever with your hand.

Mid controls, no floorboard. Shifter shaft is very tight.

It is a kind of a sloppy riding style to hit neutral while you wanted to go to second.
Pay some attention to it, try it and let us know.

ps,
Riceburners even tend to not use the clutch while shifting up. Apply some pressure to the gear shift and close the throttle and it will change gear, easy as that.
Please see my post # 22. Will try speed shifting to second, but really feel more comfortable and its smoother using the clutch

[QUOTE=rogersachs;13506950]Mark, thanks for the idea. Will check it out. The rod is an aftermarket stainless steel one and seems very well made. All was working very well for several months and then it started to go into neutral upon shifting. I have the linkage rod all the way in on both sides. Will try and lengthen one turn out.
Thanks,
Roger[/QUOTE
]No help with likage rod. Very smooth and same length as oem.

serouisly just because any one has rode a bike for years ,, dosent mean you can ride properly... or if in doubt read my first post

Get the rear wheel off the ground.

Put the transmission into first gear.

Have an assistant rock the rear wheel back and forth while you shift the transmission from first to second, just like you were riding the bike.

Does the transmission shift normally, or does it miss the shift?
