Similar issue for me. I have detachable saddlebags and a haulen *** backrest as i hate the look of stuff coming off the rear guard supports. I've searched and searched but think I'll need to get something fabricated that fits and bolts to me rear guard - it supports me sitting on the seat so can't see another 10kgs for a roll bag making any difference. I always load heavy stuff in saddlebags as want it as low as possible

for under $40 delivered, hey, I can work with it.
Much like you I too have been looking for an option of a flat rack to mount to the back of the bike where I could mount a bag or even a tour pack too. But I would never put the first rack you have a pic of because if you put to much weight into the bag, you would cause a lot of strees on the two mounting points right in the middle of the fender if the weight shifts from side to side and wouould bend the fender at these points or worse stretch the holes out and pull the rack right off. As for the second one you posted a pic of, it does a much better job of distributing the weight across the four mount points, but you still mount it to the fender which is still putting all your realiablity on the sheet metal alone. I have always thought the best way to mount a rack like this is to go about it the same way fskitch did it below, by putting all the wieght distrubution on the frame of the bike at the strut points. This all just my opinion, so take it for what it's worth.

FYI blueangel--that's an early version of AFMM3's retro job. I found it doing a google search for duo glide luggage rack's. I think you can find the repops for a fair price <$100. I agree the op's find would cause stress to the fender under load unless modified to bolt to frame (fender struts). The op's does look a bit sturdier. Especially if used for carrying heavy loads for touring. I used a motherwell rack on my original fender and it did waller out the holes in the fender a bit, my fault really for loading beyond rated capacity.
