I have a HD 1/4 fairing on my bike now. But would like to install a tsport fairing with a 16" shield. Has anybody rode with these setups? I'm hoping I'll have better wind protection with the tsport.
I think it partly depends on your height and riding position. I have not had a repop but I'm surprised that my 1/4 style fairing does a much better job overall with wind deflection than my previous 14" windshield. Perhaps it's because I have no buffeting now whereas I did before. I am only 5'7 though so the little fairing does just fine at keeping the wind off my chest and flows over my head as well. I am far more comfortable on the highways now than I ever was with the windshield on or removed. I bet if I were a few inches taller the repop would be better.
Seems to have been a few threads recently on buffeting with the style, make sure whatever you get can be adjusted for angle which seems to help those who have had challenges.
Personally I do love the look of the repop but I'm pretty darn happy with the compact nature of the Ness.
I'm 6'2" and have no buffeting with the 1/4 Fairing on my FXRS with stock handlebars, mids and a slightly forward leaning riding position, I'm a very aggressive rider and I can wear a baseball cap while riding at any speed and it doesn't move. With a Batwing on my FXDC I'm constantly having to hang on to the same hat at speeds exceeding 60 mph, seating position is the same on both bikes, I use the smaller beach bars so that I am sitting the same as the FXRS. No idea what it would be like with " bunny ears" or apes.
A week ago I installed a JD T-Sport with a 15" screen and really like it. Previously I had HD Compact Windshield which buffeted horribly. I tried everything with the HD including angle forward, angle backward, cut down from 17" to 15", move down on trees, different helmets. Although some setting were an improvement (such as half helmet with 17" screen angled back), nothing worked really well and I hated going over 60mph because I felt like a bobblehead. The JD Customs T-sport even has an adjustable windshield for fine adjustment. It rocks.
The 1/4 fairing does a great job of keeping the wind off my chest. The wind hits me on my neck no buffeting at all which is nice. Would be great if I could get the wind over my head. I think I'll give the tsport a try.
I debated on the extra cost, but the JD is worth the xtra money. Better coverage, and IMO the HD quarter looks out of place on a Dyna. JD is light years more solid than the Ness, but if its all you can afford, or love the look of....those are not bad choices. Now back to the JD. If you have a basic color, have them paint it. Not a bad up charge for the service IMO(cant comment on quality I painted mine). If you have a tri coat or custom color, they more than likely won't, it would be nice if it could be ordered bare, as the primer that comes with is not as good as I would have liked (not many parts do though now a days), and it got sanded off anyways. Also the bolts that hold the brackets on should be about a quarter to half inch longer IMO, but overall it is a well built product and I am glad I spent the xtra dough. It does a great job of blocking the wind. Before, anything above 60 was an ab workout, as the streetbobs riding position turns you into a sail, but that feeling is pretty much gone. I am 5'5" have a mustang tripper seat, Harley street slammer bars(that I wish were an inch taller). I ordered the smoked 12 inch shield(seems bullet proof, still allows some vision in the dark, looks great IMO) perfect height for me, both for vision(look over it not through it) and wind deflection, and I love it. Get one!
i have had a few different fairings over the years on different bikes. 2 ness and one hd quarter fairing. I like the look of the ness but they really are pretty flimsy and both of mine broke and cracked in multible places.
i just got my jd customs with 14 shield the other day. i have not put it on yet but this thing is top of the line in quality. i have a 14 lowrider with adjustable risers and it looks like i will not be able to keep the adjustable riser set up unless i cut the visor thing off, which i dont think is too big of deal. I have a few sets of standard risers i could try and a bottom mount headlight bucket i found for $30 off flea bay. Its wierd, my bars are in the perfect place and i dont reallly want to move them
I've never had a 1/4 Fairing but I did go from the Ness Narrowglide fairing to my T-Sport. HUGE difference. Ness fairing worked for me for little less then a year. I didn't have any buffetting but not near the coverage either. Ness provides clean air and chest and body wind protection. T-Sport provides that plus face protection. My T-Sport gets a lil buffetting the more I push it forward BUT starts blowing more air over my head and as well so kind of a toss up whether or not to run it laid back or forward. My happy medium right now is pushed forward about 1.5 - 2". The biggest part I noticed about the smaller fairing was after I been out on the bike all day and put down a fair amount miles the fatigue difference from being wind beat is leaps and bounds better with the T-Sport. They move A LOT of wind out of the way. My only complaint about the T-Sport (wind flow wise) is that I get an updraft over the tank and comes up my chest (not a strong wind I can feel much) and blows my beard up my nose. Does it the worst around 50mph. Kind of annoying, but still wouldn't give this fairing up for anything else.
Do you guys buy these T-sport replica fairings direct from JD Customs or is there possibly another source that buys in bulk for resale? I have a Rifle right now and it's just never cut it for me...the design is inferior to JD Customs' fairing and doesn't mount as well as JD's or the HD 1/4 fairing.
