I have an 03 FXD. I was checking the oil today and noticed there is a hole in the main transmission cover.....at 3' oclock. I looked at pics of other bikes on line and more often than not this hole is empty (as it seems to be in the manual also). What is the purpose of this hole? Is it an alternate place to brace exhaust? I'm pretty sure it is insignificant and will put in one of those chrome plugs when I'm 100% sure a bolt does not belong there. I hope I explained this well enough. Thanks in advance.
The vent is in the top cover with a down tube toward the left side. Best of my knowledge, there is no vent in side cover. The transmission needs that tube if it is missing.
It appears there is a "pin" ( part #4) that is in there somewhere.
That is what it is. Not a vent. Harley shows a solid pin but they use a sleeve pin with a hole (pipe) Easier to get out . There is another one at 9:00 o-clock. I had those places like that on mine. Even a couple in my swing arm. My chrome is only on the front cover. That area on mine is wrinkle semi-flat black. Bet you hole shows up shiney aluminum. Know my bolts are allen head black. Years ago, I took a rattle can of flat black and shot a little spray in the lid wrapped with a paper towel wrapped around it with a small hole in it to catch mist. Then used a Q-tip and painted all those shiny holes. They simply disappear. Flat is real easy to work with.
If it's chrome, button it. But flat works best contrasting with black. Just my opinion. I even used a funnel or a paper with a hole cut in it to shoot flat on some of the sorry finished fasteners on my bike. However, I treat my bike as a tool.

I wonder if you mean the holes that I listed in this pic. I had posted it in a thread with my exhaust install wondering what these holes were for but no response.
