Silver Powder Coat Staining
Had the 5K service done on my bike last week. Picked it up and took a ride to the Outer Banks HOG Rally. On the way I noticed that I had some fluid leaking around my brake fluid reservoir. Got back and washed my bike and that's when I noticed the problem. I had some dark stains on my cam cover and on my primary cover. I noticed that the paint had also lifted from around the cover of the brake reservoir. Will brake fluid cause that type of staining on powder coat? I took it to the dealer and they service manager declined to make a comment and said that the owner would have to look at it and make a decision. Think I have a problem and right now feel as though the service department is gathering the wagons. Has anyone experienced any staining on their powder coated surfaces?

I agree with 98glider - dot5 should not stain - ......... but did they screw up at the 5K service and top off with dot3 or dot4?? Is that what's leaking out? That sh*t will wreak havoc on paint - maybe on your engine too.

I agree, if they screwed up and used the wrong fluid your res paint is done for. If they did that, you might want to makes sure they didn't overfill your crankcase also. God only knows what goes on behind closed service doors.

Talked with the Svc Mgr last night at the monthly hog rally. I asked about if they were using DOT 5. He said they used DOT 4. I also told him if he was able to remove a couple of stains then I would finish up the rest, just in case it was some tar from road construction being done close by home. However, I tried to clean these with S100, both the liquid and the paste with no luck. I did not try any carb cleaner or solvents of that nature. If the powder coat is actually stained, that is going to be a major problem.

Did HD change to dot4 for 2006?
I know that my 2005 specifically states dot5.
either way - if they overfilled it - it's their fault.
you already know the answer - the stains aren't coming out.
