CGGorman's 99 Wide Glide build thread
Anyway, I just got back from my little tour of the region.
...Went and got beer, took a break and drank a cold one with the burned num num against the can...then...
...Drove an hour to drop off the brake pedal and battery tray at the powder shop. They're not running gloss black until next week. No biggie.
...Decided to hit up the big Harley dealership (Fort Wayne Harley) figuring they would have the solenoid rebuild kit. Waited in the parking lot until they opened. They didn't have the kit. Made some calls. The little shop nearest to home did have two of them, tho. Another hour+ drive to Jims Harley, Mendon, OH. They also had the starter terminal so I picked up that too (I guess have a spare on the way now) $65 total.
...Ordered a new battery. Should have it Friday. $200.
Fingers crossed the starter motor is OK. If not, that's about $300.
I should have plenty of wire left but I think I'll need more terminals for the 5/16 lugs. At least now I know the correct wire lengths and terminal orientations so I can build them off the bike.

Besides, you really wanted to powder the battery tray anyway didn't you??
oh, and thats the second time you've run outa beer in a crisis! What the hell??
It's weird how the beer shortage happens like that. I usually have a case of PBR (18 @ $10) in the fridge. Last weekend I splurged on some Hoptimum (6 @ $12) and Brother Benjamin (4 @ $15). Until about 36 hours ago I still had one or two of the good stuff and just hadn't restocked the PBR yet. That's now remedied.
Hoptimum and Brother Benjamin...
No idea if either are available outside the US.
I've heard that Stone brewery beers are available in the UK. Not sure about the EU. They make some pretty solid IPAs. Ruination is probably my favorite from Stone.
Also have a buddy who has his own local Micro Brewery and specializes in old recipe english Pale Ales. Makes a great beer and has won awards here in the EU.
Pretty much anything from 3 Floyd's Brewery is good. Zombie Dust is a very good American Pale Ale.
Dogfish Head Brewery is generally a good bet. I like their 90 Minute IPA. They also have (had?) A 120 minute IPA but I haven't ever seen it on the shelves. If I do ever see it, I'll buy some.
Plunger is scored and pitted from the welding arc. Contact ring was pretty beat up anyway so a rebuild was coming due regardless.
This damage really concerns me. Cracked and deformed insulator. Possible hidden winding damage? Pretty sure that's not serviceable.
The contact that twisted. I clearly strong-armed it and didn't realize it. Stupid! Notice the color change from the heat..

They are only available in satin with the chrome accents so I picked up a can of my favorite VHT wrinkle black to remedy the situation.
Unwrapped it and promptly took the grinder to the motor case bolts. Cut off those threaded bits that the OE cover fastens to.
Then cleaned it up, masked off the important bits and shot it with wrinkle. It's drying now. I'll get "after" pics tomorrow. It takes a long time to cure.
Anybody need a brand new solenoid rebuild kit? LOL
