I looked ALL OVER (the net) for 1.5mm-2mm stitching chisels with a wide spacing and could find none. I considered getting a set of pricking irons but the cost is pretty high for my extremely limited needs. I also don't really trust my workmanship with an awl. I would try it with a stiffer veg-tan hide, but this chrome tanned stuff heals so fast that I would lose the overstitcher marks within minutes.

Even the current chisels holes become invisible within 10 minutes.

I'm planning to rework my chisels with a Dremel to make the tines smaller. I'll polish them while I'm at it. I hope that's good enough. If the cover starts to come apart in a few years, I can always try something different.

eek.... Don't wanna cruel your day, but it kinda looks like you don't have the overlap needed to either roll your stitched edges (if you were planning to) and maybe come up a bit short on material for underneath riveting between the base and the surround piece.

That said I can't clearly see the thickness of the seat so you maybe ok for the underside.

Decided against hemming the perimeter. I like the idea, but it felt too risky for my current skill and the location on the seat; right on top and lots of weird curves. I am going to try it on the front and rear vertical seams, tho. Those are simple, straight lines. Something just to get a feel for the skiving. I might be more brave if I had a proper stiff, rounded "ulu" skiving knife but I only have those straight snap-off cutter blades. I tried a small sample and it was pretty rough.

The max total seat thickness is right about 1". I left about 2" for the bonding area underneath, so those side strips are about 3" wide overall.

Since I'm butt stitching the top to the sides I'll only lose about 1/8" (total) from the stitches. It FEELS like plenty of extra.

ok, should be good to go then

If you do venture out for a skiving knife, better option for that leather is the Japanese square style. Edge on those things makes a razor look dull, and you get a better cut on soft pliable leather.

Good to know. Thanks.

I can see myself making a few more items. I want a tool roll and maybe a small swingarm bag. This leather is a little too pliable for that, but maybe with a stiffener like Kydex. Or I could buy some veg-tan. Who knows...

That's really cool but not for this bike. Maybe a pre-war Indian...with buffalo horns on the forks

Kind of excited! First seam done.

Skived, stitched, glued, folded, and flat stitched. I know the spacing isn't quite right but only about three stitches will show so I wasn't worried about it.
