Default Ok, now I'm pissed -battery/starting issues continue

I have been having intermittent hard starting of my LR-S which many wrote off to me not having access to a tender. However the problem happend more often when the bike is HOT not cold, after days of not idle.

So I took a shot and replaced the battery with a Yuasa 310CCA. Which seemed great, fast turnovers, no problem. However the one thing I didn't have the chance to try was a hot start. Until today. I rode for about 45min, stopped for about 15min, and when I started back up, turn, stop, then the GD VINERROR again. Mind you, when I started it cold before the ride (after sitting overnight) it fired right up, fast as before.

A little poking around the internet warns of heat soaking the starter making it less efficient? Is that really a thing?

Its getting pretty annoying now. Do I need a f'n car battery to get this to start reliably?

I've had a few of the same issues with my Low Rider S as well. One time I was on a bridge and it took a few minutes before the bike would start up. It only happens when hot as well. I have no ideas of why, but maybe the engine is stuck on the compression stroke and the automatic compression releases aren't working properly? Someone said that to me.

I am starting to wonder if you are having a problem with your charging system. I was experiencing a similar problem when my bike was new and then it went away when I put the battery on a tender and went through a full charge cycle. I just presumed at that point that the dealer did not fully charge cycle the battery prior to installation. I also did the Internet research and came to the conclusion that hot starts will always be a bit harder anyways and while I do have a periodic hard hot restart, I never have received the VIN Error prompt.

I know starter heat soak can be a problem on old big block Chevys with long tube headers. Seems logical that it could be a problem on other vehicles with high heat as well. You can buy insulation kits for the BBC issue. I'm sure something could be adapted or fabricated for harley.

Does the engine crank at all or just slowly?

It will crank once slowly and then it may start (showing the vinerr between the slow crank and starting), or as today (and several times before) it does the one slow crank, then the compensator kicks back with a loud clunk and shows the vinerr. I usually let off the starter at that point. Usually it starts the second time after the kick, but today it did it twice. Started the third try.

Kick sounds like a timing issue. I wonder if the crank or cam sensor is getting proper voltage or if it also suffering from heat issues. I had a jeep that was hard to start during season changes that ended up being the cam sensor.

Damn EFI engines...without knowing all the parameters in the ECU, it's difficult to know where to look. Could be a minimum crank/trigger speed threshold...may or may not rely on a cam sensor for timing.

I'm assuming the dealership hasn't been able to help you. I wish I could do better for ya. Intermittent electrical problems are the absolute worst.

Another note, I also stopped getting this hot start clunk, as well as a smoother, quieter hot idle once I switched over to redline fluids. Not sure it is relevant, just an observation. It very may well be the automatic compression release or that I simply have gotten into the habit of releasing the starter when there is a pause in the hot start.

Is the 110 used in anything else yet? If so, it may worth checking in with the owners to see if they are seeing these issues and have a fix.

check your cables. I had a hard starting and charging issue with my bike. I decided to replace the negative battery cable since it only cost $9. I took the old one off and cut the rubber sleeve off of it.......it was corroded and green from end to end. Corrosion was causing resistance, which was causing heat, and causing engine codes to be registered.

That would be my guess as well.. If the starter sounds like it's stalling or even kicking back, I'd check the releases.. I'd also check the charging system.. The simple voltage test would be good with the motor at idle and 2K...
