Hey, a question for those in the know that are watching...
The recent engine builds all show guys buying specialized holders for their runout measurements. Any reason crank runout can't be measured with conventional dial indicator holders?
Not at all.. I use a drop back.. or even a 0.0001 test indicator when wanting to split flea hairs... The universal ones are better since they can be used for other stuff.
Well, I got some stuff done today, but cvaria has clearly moved into the lead here! I brought some stuff to work today, and took advantage of some shop equipment... After cleaning all the new bearings in the parts washer, drying them with air, and coating them with assembly lube, I used our hydraulic/pneumatic press to install the outer cam bearings in the new cam plate. This 25-Ton press was really nice to use, although I was a little bit nervous about not being able to feel when the bearings were fully seated. Operating the pressure with a foot pedal eliminates the ability to feel any resistance, and I'm sure it's powerful enough to pop everything right through the plate... But it was fine.
I got home around 9:30,and installed the inner bearings. Super simple! Having the right tool really makes this a breeze... they just went right in with no fuss at all. A couple of minutes, basically.
When I test fit the new cams I thought I lucked out... They both spun freely without interference. But S&S says to make sure there is at least .030" everywhere, and there isn't. I'll have to do some clearancing. I was going to jump into it, but decided it was best to wait until I'm a little fresher...
I disassembled the old cam plate (as much as I could without a press) so that I can bring it to work tomorrow to press the cams out. I thought I could bring the new plate tomorrow as well, to press in the new cams... But I realized I'll need them to check the clearancing. I'll have to make an additional trip to the office to use the press sometime over the weekend. Kind of a pain, since it's almost 30 miles away.
