A few thoughts unrelated to engine-specific junk.

-Spring manufacturing tolerance (more than nominal on inner, less than nominal on outer)
-Shoe material tolerance.
-Burrs on inner chain.
-Tensioners were not replaced in sets.

"Tensioners were not replaced in sets"

Specifically I wondering about this. How many miles have you put on it yourself

Only around 3000... And I would be surprised if the outer had been changed in the past, considering the mileage. Although, looking through the pile of receipts I have, the original build used SE211 cams which were changed out for Andrews TW60s a year later... I suppose one tensioner could have been changed then...

Hmmm... I do have heavy valve springs. I wonder whether the change to hydraulic tensioners would reduce that effect?

Any way to test the chains for integrity?

I don't know if it was my imagination, but the inner unit did seem much harder to open than the outer one did...

Hey, a question for those in the know that are watching...

The recent engine builds all show guys buying specialized holders for their runout measurements. Any reason crank runout can't be measured with conventional dial indicator holders?

I'm sure you could do it with a different holder. I was going to borrow one from work that basically has a swivel arm that can be bolted to anything. I think the only reason I ended up buying one was that I told myself at the beginning of this project that I wouldn't skimp on special tools, for the simple reason that I didn't want to be distracted/frustrated trying to make things work if there was a simpler solution. I figured I'd find enough frustration just figuring out how to do the job correctly without also having to mickey-mouse tools!

But in hindsight, I think this particular step would have been pretty simple with a universal holder of some sort.

Thanks guys. I figured as much but being uneducated I hated to assume.

I have a chest full of measuring equipment for engine building but this is my first V-Twin. I'll be opening her up in a couple weeks...either to replace just tensioner shoes or the entire contents of the cam chest...depending on what I find.
