I have had a 2001 Dyna LR for about 4 years. Last year I started having starter problems. Loud clank or grinding noise when i tried to crank it. It only happens when its really heated up and usually only once then it cranks fine. It will also blow out excess fuel through the carb sometimes. It still has the CV carb. It has an S&S gear drive and after market cam. Not sure what cam. engine work was done when I bought it. Bike has about 22000 miles on it. Ive read some post about compensator problems and it sounds pretty close. Anybody have any ideas.
Starter clutch,
.fyi, 89 toyota corrola the one with out inhection, sane starter clutch.
If starter pinion or ring gear gots chunks, after markets are available,so u dont have to replace the clutch basket.
comps are pretty good on the pre 06 bikes. But they do come lose. If its the case, and you catch it before it eats the stator rotor, dont be shy with the locktight.
. Do you get a clunk when shutting off bike?
Got a multi meter a.d know how to use it, check continuity through your grounds, bagtery voltage ,or a local autozone etc to load test it? Poor man version of load test, fire up bike 5 or so times in a row,if batteey can hang with that ussually a good battery.
Do you ever get the wizzzzel whirrrrr, or a kinda funy screah when firing the bike?
Brand new battery but I'll check it. It did hear that weird noise for a while but I checked and found the neg battery terminal was lose. That seemed to fix it until this started
Most likley its your starter clutch going south if your hearing the weird screah sound, think electric motor rc car sound in a way crossed with finger nails on the chock board.
Not to bad of a job. But you fo have to pull the primary cover to get the opinion off to remove the starter. Give ya a chance to check the ring gear teeth as well.
Battery and the box need to come out then you can unbolt the the starter.
Before you do, get tge multi metter, and check the starter draw as well, help determine if you just need. A clutch or actual rebuild or new starter. You tube is a great thing as well. Its not hard if your fairly mechanicky inclined.
