First problem: The speedometer on my 07 FXDB has not been working. When you turn the run switch on, it lights up and displays the odometer reading. As soon as the bike starts, the light goes out, no odometer reading, and no speed reading. It runs, but the idle seems off. I run the diagnostic and it pulls up U1016 under SP. No other codes present. Since I am able to run the diagnostic and the gauge works when switching to run, I would assume it's not the speedo going bad. Would the speed sensor be a good place to start? Any advise on another place to begin?
Second problem: Right beside the speed sensor, there is a ground wire attached. I disconnected it to attempt to get to the speed sensor. I had to stop to go help the wife with my daughter for a while. I wasn't able to pull the speed sensor before it got dark and forgot to reattach the ground wire. I tried to start the bike, and it sparked. Now the bike won't start and the starter seems to not fully cycle to start the bike. Did I just fry the starter cause of the bonehead move?
Check the speedo wiring connections in the console to start with.
If you got a spark check your fuses for continuity.
Make sure your battery and ground connections are clean and tight.
U1016 Loss of ECM Serial Data. No ground wire could cause that. Without the ground, there was no voltage to the ECM, causing the U1016 code. As for the spark from the unattached cable . . . Check all of you fuses. Do a diagnostic again and clear the error codes. Disconnect the + battery cable, have a beer and reattach the cable. Check diagnostics for error codes. Should start up.
Sorry, I forgot to update on the resolution. The non start and the speedometer issue was the battery. Placed a load tester on it instead of a volt meter and the amps were way down. New battery and both problems solved. Still throwing the U1016 code, but it runs great.
