Thanks for all the replies everybody. So today when I had a sec I went out and pulled the battery cover and put a volt meter to the battery with the bike off. The meter was showing 27 volts. When I would start the bike and then put the meter on it, it was showing up to 30 volts. Any thoughts? I'm thinking that the regulator is bad.
If not, you've got the only 27V Harley in existence!
Unless you've one of those newfangled WideGlide Livewires!
Ok, seriously, perform a voltage check statically and under load. Then a voltage check after start up. These can all be done across the poles.
Should see something like
12.5+ static
11+ under load
13.5+ after start up.
Right now I've got the battery on the tender to ensure the battery is at a full charge. Tomorrow I will test it out again to see what I get. I had the meter set to read up to 200 volts. The meter doesn't have a lower setting. When I put the meter on the battery before start up it was reading 27 volts, running it was reading 30 volts and after shutting it down it was still reading 27 volts. Tomorrow I'll take some pics of the meter if the reading is still off.
I'm just about there lol....If I can save myself a few hundred and do the work at home though I'd rather do that. I'm going to borrow a meter today to verify that mine is or isn't defective.
Well it looks like I've got a bad stator. Used my buddies meter and it was showing 12.5 volts sitting but under load there was no change. While the bike ran and even hitting about 2000 RPM the voltage never changed. Constantly around 12.5 to 12.7.
Before going for stator, unhook the three wire plug from it at the regulator. Then at 2000 rpm, and with a good AC meter set on AC, connect your meter across two wires. Three check combinations for the three-phase system. What is your AC volt readings?
